Red Thread Design

May 26, 2009 by Kath

Red Thread Design is a Toronto studio that specializes in the design and production of children’s clothing using Asian and retro-inspired fabrics. Designed by Devorah Miller, mom of three gorgeous girls, the line combines fabulous prints with simple, highly functional designs. Everything is ethically made in Toronto of premium cotton and bamboo fabrics.

Red Thread is best known for its one-size “Caterpillar Dress,” designed to fit girls from about 12 months to about 4 years – they gradually transition from a dress to a top and look great at every stage. They layer beautifully so they can be worn all year long – they’re totally flexible, functional, and fun to wear, and very popular as gifts.

Miller is committed to designing clothes that kids really love to wear and that are practical and flexible and colorful. Most kids’ clothes have such a narrow window of opportunity to be worn and enjoyed (as we all well know), but these dresses can be worn for a long time, shared by sisters and handed down. Although the line is focused mainly on girls’ clothing, there are also some great tops for boys, featuring elephants, fire trucks, and ever-popular sock monkeys.

The adoption of her second daughter in 2003 inspired the name of the label “Red Thread.” Along with its literal relevance to her design work, it also refers to an old Chinese proverb beloved by adoptive families: “An invisible red thread connects those who are destined to meet regardless of time, place or circumstance. The thread may stretch or tangle but will never break.”
