Pure and Simple

The fashion trends this Fall appear very frou frou to me. I’m seeing ruffles, prints and fringe (see Style File) in the magazines and on the streets.
Style trends in the kitchen are much more streamlined and simple. Gone are the gingham, roosters, and multi-coloured appliances of days past (when was the last time you saw an avocado coloured stove?), and a tour of contemporary kitchens shows stainless steel, subway tile backsplashes and monochromatic cupboards.
It may not be in your budget to renovate or even replace your avocado stove with a stainless steel update, but you can bring those pure and simple design concepts into your own kitchen this season. Kitchen appliances have gone upscale, and a simple purchase can make you feel stylish and professional in your own home.
In a vein similar to having Isaac Mizrahi design for Target, or Patricia Field for Payless shoes, celebrity designers are now reaching the home design and decor markets. The idea is that we common people can be inspired by the top celebrity designers by finding some of their creations in our price range.
Recently introduced to the Canadian market, J.A. Henckels is offering a number of kitchen appliances under the Twin Pure label designed by celebrated designer Matteo Thun. The all have a cylindrical handle for comfort and are constructed with brushed 18/10 stainless steel, giving them a substantial heft. The Twin Pure line is marketed for the gourmet consumer seeking uncompromised quality and design.
I took the potato masher, swivel peeler and can opener for a test drive recently. Ranging in price from $18 to $40 these are not inexpensive products, but I was thrilled with the results. They look stylish, felt good in my hand and did their jobs exceptionally well. I’m a firm believer that there’s a time to save and a time to splurge, and I’d recommend the Twin Pure for your kitchen splurge!

Bet you could find some cool vintage 1960s table clothes on EBAY that might still work with the sleek look as a kind of fun juxtaposition…
