My friend Rachel called me crying this afternoon. You see,
her husband is out of town and her newborn baby Dana is super colicky. And she
knows that I know. Of course I do! My
baby is just coming out of that hard colic stage and really, even though I am
trying to block it out, I still remember that there were lots of tears – from
me AND the baby. She also knows that I know the perfect recipe for helping out
a friend in need of a break and a girlfriend.
I gathered up all the necessary equipment – three tubs of
Ben and Jerry’s, a copy of Sixteen Candles, and, of course, a box of tissues. I
made sure that my husband was home to watch my two munchkins, I changed into my
most comfy pair of flannel PJs and hopped into my car to head to Rachel’s.
You see, it doesn’t take much. I forced Rachel to relax on
the couch and eat her weight in ice cream while I worked my magic on baby Dana.
We rocked, we sang, we danced, and I taught her a very important lesson about
the power of John Hughes and teen angst movies.
I also taught baby Dana a very important lesson about
sisterhood. I taught her that even though we as moms are young and tough and
successful and, well, obviously awesome, sometimes we just need to ask for
help. And sometimes we need to offer the help…even if it’s in the form of
sugar and flannel.
