Every now and then I do the momma cop out and buy a homemade chicken pot pie. My favourite is at a local urban boutique that calls itself a market. It had big chunks of chicken and not too much cream and good pastry. $14.99.
Said market has had a facelift and looks better than I do in every light. The chicken pot pie is now $28.99 to help pay for its reno. It looks no different from the old one.
“Did the chicken in this pie go to Harvard?” Otherwise could you explain the price jump?” I ask anyone who will listen.
They had no explanation. I said ‘I am not sure you care but I won’t be buying it. I am going to make one.’
I did. It was ok.(see above)
Still though, piss me off, pretentious pie. I depended on you.
What do you buy when you are doing the momma cop out (not cooking fresh yourself)? I want to know because I need a few of these in my fridge for the days that are long on task and short on hours-

love it Id- for an Italian momma that must have been hard for her to go with the faker!!!!
Idas says
Hi Nancy,
my Italian mom fooled everyone on a Sunday lunch with PC Blue Line meatballs in her home-made sauce. Seriously. I had a sneaky suspicion because they had a too-perfect round consistancy. 🙂
I have not bought them myself because they are not organic howerver the ingredients seem simple. If they were organic, I would love them.
ciao

I have no guilt. Chili from a can, sauce in a jar, frozen anything. I can guess where that $30 pie is from….because I think my step mother gets our entire pre-cooked Xmas dinner from the same place….:)
Erin Little says
I’ve let the guilt go. I’ll buy a lasagna or pizza from the store.
I want to have the party where friends all drink wine and make yummy, healthy food to freeze.
Nancy says
yes! I have doen this once and really loved how prepared I felt! Thank you for reminding me, Jo
Nancy says
great stuff Tom! Up until recently Costco had roast chicken for 6.99 and it was bigger than most and very tasty not dry like some. It might be 8.99 now but every day of the week.
Have you ever put avocado in smoothies? good one- don’t tell my children- they brace themselves every week for my next ‘unexpected’ nutritional kick…….
Julie says
just me and my hubby…although i get to play in the “all-star” game this weekend! finally, 41 years old and an all star! i’m gonna get me some chicken pot pie!
Tom says
“Chicken Tuesdays” at Metro!
That normally priced $10.00 pre-cooked, roasted chicken is $6.99 at Metro on Tuesday evenings. The one at Bayview and Eglinton does something like 400+ chickens for their Tuesday special (seems I’m not the only one that has caught on to this great “time saver”) cooked in those little ovens behind the counter when you walk in the doors. Can you believe that?! Throw pieces on a salad, pieces on multi-grain bread for a sandwich, fortify chicken noodle soup with bits of added chicken. Shoot, you could even add bits to Nancy’s chicken pot pie! AND, my dog loves the bits of skin and other pieces that seem to fall off when you’re picking through it and can’t really identify their origin. By Thursday, after the bones have been discarded (usually Wednesday evening), he’s visibly upset. Although he sure gets pumped-up again when he smells that roasted chicken come in the door with me the next Tuesday evening! If he could talk, I’m sure he’d be screaming: “Yahoo! It smells like chicken Tuesday!” when I come in the door.
Also, fruit smoothies. I’ve even begun to throw a good handful of baby spinach leaves in with the blueberries, strawberries, banana, yogurt, low-fat ice cream, skim milk and a scoop of protein powder (I was feeling guilty we weren’t getting our portion of greens – you can’t taste them so I’ll keep exploring to find out just how much I can add before they alter the taste). It seriously fills you up! It’s fast. AND, they taste really good!
Nancy says
maybe a bare bottom spanking with a wooden spoon?
Aileen says
My go-to is eggs, in whatever form people feel like – soft boiled with toast soldiers, omelets, scrambled with cheese… Not exactly catching all the food groups but it’s fast and filling enough for the kids. I also freeze leftovers of larger meals like stew, soup, chili, etc., so there’s usually something I can drag out and reheat. $28.99 for chicken pot pie is unconscionable. They should be ashamed of themselves.
Jo says
30 bucks for a chicken pot pie would piss me off too…unless it came with someone who came over after to do the dishes. Around here, we’ve got a place called the dinner factory. You take an afternoon (optionally, do a party with friends and wine, all doing the same thing), and prepare a bunch of meals to place in the freezer for those days where you don’t feel like trying too hard. They have all the ingredients all ready for you, and it’s like you’re on a cooking show, you just throw it all together and leave the mess for someone else to clean up as you walk out with your bag of entrees. (they also have theoptikn of just picking up a meal someone there has already assembled if you’re in a pinch).
Tracey says
Heh. 😉
Julie says
that’s how i shop for meat! 50% off meat and bread day! stock up the freezer! 🙂
Nancy says
you may not participate in this discussion.
Nancy says
agreed! any place that looks that pretty is taking us for a ride.
graydon says
That is hilarious. I feel your pain. The ONLY way I will buy their stuff is when it’s half price. Just look for the red stickers. That’s when I buy a bunch of stuff and throw it in my freezer!
Tracey says
Okay, how about red sauce from a jar? Or frozen Chinese dumplings? Otherwise, just about everything is from scratch. Except for the super yummy McDonalds lunches sometimes
Nancy says
after ultimate you should have what ever you want ! Major workout. Does the whole family play, Julie?
PC Lasagnas have ingredients I can’t pronounce though. Creates momma guilt.
Julie says
after ultimate, we’d put the kids to bed and throw in a knorr skillet sensation thingy. it was 10 minutes of waiting and then dinner….and they’re discontinued!!!!! still trying to find a replacement on that one.
however i find that the PC lasagnas are fairly good for a quickie and i think they come in smaller sizes now.
Nancy says
ok- I don’t consider buying a roast chicken a momma cop out- is that the best you’ve got, grumbler?
Tracey says
I buy a roasted chicken, possibly once a week. We can eat it in pieces for one dinner (with fries or potatoes and, say, green beans) and then I use the rest either to shred into chicken salad, or I dice some and add it to pastas with veggies and a bit of red sauce, often for kid’s dinner (any leftovers get packed for lunch.) For the $9 they charge me for it, it feels completely worth it – saves ma a bunch of time.
That chicken pot pie looks delicious! I LOVE chicken pot pie. Sadly, the gluten-free husband can’t eat it, and my kids don’t love it enough for me to really bother to make it… a lot of time and effort goes into making one of those (so I make 2 at a time.) But holy balls, $28.99 feels like there ought to be a small nugget of gold in there somewhere, doesn’t it? Ack. (PS – your pie looks gorgeous and delish… I hope it was!!
