You may recognize Dr. Uche Odiatu from his appearances on numerous television talk shows and news segments here in Canada and the U.S.A.. He’s not only a celebrated speaker but a fitness and overall health expert. He’s also a practicing dentist. Little did I know, he’s actually in the same dental building as my kid’s dentist. Small world. But when you see Dr. Odiatu you can’t help but notice his perfect set of pearly whites. He just lights up a room!
Recently, UrbanMoms had a chance to meet Dr. Odiatu to find out more about the advantages to proper oral health and what whitening can do for you.
I must confess I’m in the 90%…. that is, those who don’t floss regularly. Jeepers! Only 10% of Canadian adults floss daily according to Dr. Odiatu.
Why is that?
I’m lazy. Well, ok, yes…I say busy.
It’s a pain in the butt. Yes.
I’ve always said that if there was something that would make things easier I’d try it. I’m going to search out the new Philips Sonicare AirFloss at my local drug store and give it a try. I’m crossing my fingers – it could just be what will put me on a proper flossing track! Dr. Odiatu also mentioned that it’s great for braces too! Ever tried flossing around those wires? UGH! Perfect for my son!
Aside from health aspects he also spoke about teeth whitening. There are numerous products out there to help whiten teeth but how do you know what’s right for you and what suits your lifestyle? You can opt to try out the white strips that are found in the drug store aisles or you can have your dental professional do it for you. Not only does whitening your teeth make your teeth appear healthier, Dr. Odiatu says, “it also can easily take 10 years off the appearance of your age!” (that would make me look…18, right?)
We had a chance to get a few questions answered with Dr. Odiatu…
UrbanMoms: Is professional whitening done by a dental professional expensive?
Dr. Odiatu: In the 1990’s whitening sessions could run a patient around $1000 but with the latest technology and offerings today, you can have this done for $300-$500. Plus, with the WhiteSpeed system out by Philips Sonicare we are seeing 40% better results with their light activating whitening speed process. This is the fastest, easiest and most effective whitening solution offered by Philips Zoom!
UrbanMoms: What is the difference between the white strips at home and the new Philips whitening system?
Dr. Odiatu: Your dental professional creates custom fit trays for day and night use. It’s a more precise method of whitening and guided by a professional.
After the WhiteSpeed in office treatment the Dentist provides The DayWhite and NiteWhite take-home whitening formulas in the form of custom fit trays with whitening gel. The gel contains ACP, which when combined with peroxide, fluoride and potassium nitrate, results in whiter teeth and reduced sensitivity, and also helps to rebuild enamel and fill in surface defects. The results are lasting with less fade back to original tooth colour even after 6 months.
UrbanMoms: Who are you seeing that want this system?
Dr. Odiatu: I’ve seen adults who have major events coming up, including brides and grooms to be, public speakers, and everyday people who want to put their best smile forward.

Have you ever tried whitening your teeth? Was it easy?
This post was not sponsored nor was I compensated. UrbanMoms was invited to this event to learn more about the whitening system and to meet Dr. Odiatu.

I love my sonicate toothbrush (couldn’t live without it!) and I’m an intermittent flosser so the air-flossing thing really intrigues me. As for whitening, would LOVE to do it but thought it was too expensive. Think I’ll try it now that I know the price is much more reasonable. I’m an inveterate red wine and coffee drinker, so I probably need this more than most 😉
