Laura, a divorced mother of 3, shares her love of all things cinematic with reviews of the latest movies to hit the big screen, as well as some older ones she watches on satellite tv. She rarely rents DVDs – not for a lack of interest, but that they don’t usually make it back to the rental store on time!
I have some exciting news! I have found myself a movie watching partner. Through the wonders of the internet, I found a friend who enjoys the same type of movies I do, and would like to go see some shows with me. I know I said that I wasn’t going to the theatre this weekend, but I completely forgot that Step Brothers opened on Friday! So I called up my new movie buddy and off we went.
(this is the r-rated version of the trailer, so if you are at work or have small children around, turn down the volume!)
If you are a Will Farrell fan, this movie will not disappoint. Within the first 15 minutes I had laughed more than I have at any other movie in recent memory. For the first bit, it looks like Farrell will outshine his co-star, John C. Reilly, but Reilly redeems himself quickly and it’s impossible to tell who is the funnier step brother. The movie is crass, full of the f-word and sexual references, but the language is well placed, and adds to the comedy rather than just being annoying. Step Brothers pulled in an impressive $30 million at the box office on opening weekend, and I expect with word of mouth it should have another great weekend coming up.
The theatre was not the only thing I was watching this weekend. In the mood to continue our evening journey into adolescent comedy, my movie buddy and I came back to my house where we laughed for another 2 hours while watching Superbad. I know it’s raunchy, I know it’s distasteful, but it is just too darn funny. I love Seth Rogan, and can’t wait until his new movie, Pineapple Express, opens on August 8
As if those two movies weren’t enough, I had to add a third. Have you noticed what was missing? That huge McAvoid in my weekend? I saw TWO movies, and neither had James McAvoy in them! I have Becoming Jane on my DVR, but really wasn’t in the mood for Anne Hathaway (she’s right up there with Keira Knightley for me), and there was a new McAvoy release on DVD, so I went to the video store and picked up a copy of Penelope. This cute modern fairy tale stars McAvoy (of course!) and Christina Ricci, a girl who becuase of a 100 year old family curse is born with a pigs nose. The curse can be broken if she marries and her mother, played by Catherine O’Hara (love her!!) is desperately trying to find a suitor who doesn’t run when he sees Penelope’s face. Along comes McAvoy (sigh…) a bit of is-he-who-he-seems-to-be and some great comedy moments with producer Reece Witherspoon, and all around it was a fun, feel good movie.
Now let’s just hope I can get Penelope back to the video store on time!

I don’t even remember seeing Penelope when it was in theatrical release, but it looks wonderful! Do you think it would be appropriate for kids?
