One-on-One for a Change

March 8, 2011 by amreen

DSC05348.JPGMy Baby was born into chaos. As a third child, from Day One, her “mom” experience has been that of a crazy, screaming, overstretched lunatic.

I’m almost always yelling.  Almost always rushing. And almost always cramming her into her car seat to be dragged to hockey/soccer/dance/drama/piano etc.

But this week, it’s different. The Boy and the Girl are in Calgary with their dad, having some special time with their grandparents.  The Baby and I are flying solo in Toronto, and I have to say, it’s really nice.

When the older two first left, the house felt creepily quiet.  I miss them like crazy, and out of necessity, I’ve finally figured out Skype.  However, I’m also really really enjoying this alone time with my Baby…who, I discovered, is not really a baby anymore.

In fact, she’s a strong, opinionated, vocal, almost-three year-old, who is savouring this time with me as much as I am with her.  We’ve been staying up late and cuddling, eating weird food for dinner (like samosas and cereal, crackers and cheese, crackers and jam!) and going for long walks in our neighbourhood. We went shopping for Dora colouring books, and had dinner together at a Greek restaurant while we both coloured.  It’s perfect.

I’m having definite déja vu of my early mom years with the Boy.  That was the last time, for me, that I was with one child.  It was a very special time, full of adventures.  In retrospect, it was so fleeting.

The big kids are back on Friday with Daddy and grandparents in tow. I know that I’ll be ready for some chaos by then, but right now I’m going to watch Treehouse with my special little girl.

Wowzers, Sara – four kids! Serious props to your mom! I’ve got those memories too and you’re right, they are so special. in fact, one “alone” trip I did with my mom was to Chicago in 1985; my first visit there and it was amazing! have a great trip!

I LOVE this! I bet you’re both enjoying it so much! As the youngest of four I have a couple of very special memories when it was just my parents and I and I savour them. How great for you guys!

Thanks so much for the kind words, I’m “blushing” 🙂
It’s a good time – a reminder that I should be doing this with each of my kids.

That sounds wonderful. Enjoy every second. And I second Tracey, she is as gorgeous as her mum.

How special for you and your sweet little miss! Her experience sounds like that of my third: “born into chaos” indeed. Enjoy the time!
