On Thursday night, i had the pleasure of attending the opening night preview party of the return of The Artist Project in Toronto. The four-day art show allowed for everyone from seasoned art collectors to first-time buyers to check out over 150 of the best juried independent artists. Please take note: Ali is a novice to the art world. But, I LOVE to look at different kinds of art. and since I will be buying a new house in a year from now, I love getting a taste of what I one day could be displaying in my home.
Overwhelmed is a probably an understatement when describing how i felt when i first walked into The Liberty Grand. I didn’t even know where to start. but by the end of the night, thanks to the super friendly artists from all over North America (don’t even get me started on Ben Ploughman, the artist with the awesome Newfoundland accent…), what i thought i liked and didn’t like is completely the opposite of what kinds of art actually speak to me.
before thursday night, i couldn’t have told you what mixed media even was, but Alison Hodson’s work mixes photography and fabric and it simply blew me away (and giant thank yous to her for assuring me that she also uses a Nikon D40, and that it’s really all in the lenses)
i couldn’t possibly do her work justice…not even the close-up…
And Vancouver native Emily’s Cooper’s photography work captivated me (she works with photographs and then uses photoshop. i know, right? i can barely remove a pimple using photoshop and she can create masterpieces!)
i think, though, that my most favorite work was Matthew Tarini’s (i COVET both the remote shot and the subway shot and want them both hanging in my new house!). It blows me away that he’s still in school.
you can see my full set here.

Wow. Awesome! I have always found art kind of intimidating so I am glad another art newbie found it so fun and interesting. Sounds like a great event!
