News Headlines for Monday, April 13, 2009

April 13, 2009 by Kath

In National News:

RRFloodThumbnail.jpgThreat of more Manitoba flooding remains while ice shifts north (CBC)

In our opinion: In an unusually cold and wet spring, Manitoba’s normal flood-control systems (including Winnipeg’s floodway) are not effective in the face of larger-than-usual ice floes. Our thoughts are with the many families whose homes are at risk.

Police continue hunt for missing Ont. girl (canada.com)

Sask. teens rescue family from sinking car
(Globe and Mail)

In World News

PhilipsThumbnail.jpgFamily, academy express relief after captain’s rescue (CNN)

In our opinion: We’re very happy to learn that Captain Richard Philips has been safely rescued, but the death of three Somali pirates during the struggle has sparked calls for revenge which could lead to an escalation of violent piracy.

Deadly gunbattle erupts as Thai protests spread (msnbc)

Iran welcomes nuclear talks plan
(BBC)

In Entertainment News

ObamaDogThumbnail.jpgThe Obama’s dog has arrived – at last! (People)

In our opinion: Is this story Politics or Entertainment? We dunno, but frankly this picture of little Bo (a Portugese water dog given to the Obama’s by the Kennedy family) is just too cute not to feature.

Blame Canada! Billy Bob’s band cancels due to illness (E!)

Madonna continues adoption campaign (UPI)

Things that make us go hmmm…

A battle of Wills (Globe and Mail)

Ahh, sorry if you’re not a fan of the Bard: we just couldn’t resist this one. Have fun and read the comments when you’re done with the article as titillating debate ranges from the relevance of the story to conspiracy stories that William Shakespeare never actually wrote the plays attributed to him. To sum up, we’ll quote Globe commenter Ian Watson from Stratford (Canada, of course) who writes: “Who cares what he looked like or who in fact he was? — a courtier in
disguise, a roomful of monkeys with typewriters!? It doesn’t matter.
Read the plays!”
