I am officially without a nanny.
we fired her.
i guess you could say that we got tired of the binging and purging, the staying out all night. the naps she was taking on the couch in the middle of the day. the laziness. the using email in the middle of the day. the ignoring of our kids. the nastiness towards Emily. the fact that she was sitting by the door each day, in her coat and hat, waiting for us to come home so she could leave. we just got tired of it all.
so, she’s gone. and as it turns out, we just beat her to the punch. apparently, she rented herself an apartment downtown in January and has been sleeping there every night since. without telling us. some live-in nanny, eh? and she was simply waiting for her papers to kick in and then she was going to leave us.
she was pretty emotional. she was with us for three years, two of which were incredible years. she was a part of our family. The kids took it pretty well. we actually told them that she was leaving because she wanted to find another job. we didn’t want them to know that we fired her. we wanted it all to end on good terms.
pretty emotional until she talked to one of her friends who convinced her to ask us for another week’s termination pay. We paid her through the end of April – a month’s pay. we paid her two weeks’ vacation pay and two weeks termination pay. plus an extra bonus. we thought we were being kind, since technically, we didn’t really owe her anything. but, she’s claming she’s entitled to another week of pay.
jews call this chutzpah. i call it not gonna happen.
my new nanny starts in two weeks. i’m so looking forward to starting fresh with someone new. nannies – and kids – are like pancakes. you always screw up the first one. he.
Song and Video of the Day. Since i missed last night’s American Idol…

Wow! It’s the end of an era! And the beginning of a new and better one. I can’t believe she asked for more pay — chutzpah, indeed! So, glad you’re starting fresh. 🙂 Glad for you, glad for the kids.

it sounds like her behavior is similar to mine… yeeks – but no one is paying me to email and ignore my kids! lol

my jaw is on the floor with what you have paid her already, was she entitled to any of it? and .. she wants more. I’m so glad you are starting fresh .. but what will you do for the two weeks you are waiting? Good luck and I hope the new nanny is everything you hope she will be!

I feel like congratulations are in order, but having not ever had to deal with this situation, i have no idea if that’s appropriate. But, still, congrats on making that decision. I know it must be a relief to have that situation resolved — especially in a way that is so good for your family. Suffice it to say I’m happy for you.

Good luck with the new nanny. I hope it works out really well. And, isn’t it refreshing when you’ve made a decision that was a long time coming? Good luck with it all.

hi Ali, i have worked as a professional nanny.and you ,my ,friend are a saint for putting up with that very unprofessional behaviour.the nerve of her to demand more pay when you have been more than generous.don’t give her another penny.so you have paid her in total for 2 months and the greedy woman, who wasn’t doing her job wants more?and being mean to emily! for shame to take out her anger, frustration, boredom etc..on a child.and waiting,by the door, for you to get home.she’s lucky you kept her there when acting like all of that!i’m glad you she’s gone and best of luck with new nanny.

For some reason, I just feel like saying “whew”. I always feel like a new employee (whether at work or at home) is a new chance to get it right. Best of luck! As for the pay thing… oy.

So…are you gonna pay her?? Hope it all works out. Clean slate.
