My Very First Crush Died Today

June 26, 2009 by Jen

My first crush, my 12-year-old-girl love Michael Jackson died today at the age of 50 . Wow. Like many young teen girls in the early 80’s, I loved Michael Jackson. So much so that it became (and to this day continues) to be a bit of a family joke…at my expense I might add.

My dad takes every opportunity he can to tell people how my pre-teen girl bedroom wall was plastered with pictures of this once dreamy pop king during his iconic Thriller days and how I would declare that he was the “perfect human being”. I spent many an evening listening adoringly to PYT or Human Nature and gazing lovingly at this:

My 13th Birthday party was actually a Michael Jackson themed sleepover! We spent hours watching The Making of Thriller over and over again. We were obsessed. Despite his decline into weirdness of late at this time he was a young, talented heartthrob.

My 13-year-old self is so sad.

Absolutely gutted! I can’t believe it. This whole situation has my 10 year old is listening obsessively to MJ. She is disappointed she is missing the first session of camp this year because as she puts it “I bet the entire session finale will be Michael Jackson and it will be soooooooo goood!”

Although I wasn’t personally a huge MJ fan, I do recognize his HUGE influence on pop music and especially dance and videos. He did have a sad life and I am sorry he died so young.

It is sad, he was so young and had such a hard life in some ways, at least with mental health issues.
I remember your 13th party vividly, we were so obsessed! It’s laughable now. I still remember my Thriller moves though, Dale and I were dancing Thriller (lit by the midnight sun) in the Yukon at a friend’s wedding three years ago!
His concert was the first big, adult concert I attended.
