Now that we have that loathsome Valentine’s Day holiday over we can start getting into the good stuff! Easter (aka chocolate feast and four day weekend); May 2-4 (aka beer feast and start of summer) and Canada Day (aka more beer and unusually long weekend if you work it right). But this past weekend for many of us was Family Day. And I LOVED it! For the first time in a very, VERY long time, I didn’t wake up itching to get Will to daycare and have a break. Activities, food, friends, family – the weekend was chock full of all of them!
From Friday night to Sunday morning, Will and I shacked up with my nephew while my sister was away. Scotty is not crazy about Will right now. Actually he’s not crazy about ME and my constant hounding of Will. So he does his own thing quite a bit. But we did have a great time at the Granite Club swimming on Saturday with my dad and step-mom. Scotty even held on to Will and swam with him. We had lunch with my step-brother and his family. I’m loving seeing Will interact with his cousins…and I have a sense that he and Matthew may get into some trouble together down the line.
On Sunday, we headed up to Barrie to see my other family…the non-blood relation kind. We decided to go for a snowshoe in the woods, with Will in a toboggan. He was SO pumped to see animals and SO pissed when ‘all the animals were sleeping. No one wanted to see me.’ oops. It really should have been a reality show – 6 adults; 2 dogs; 1 toddler and one Chinese exchange student who would have rather been having all her teeth pulled than enjoying the Canadian winter. It was a riot. Then we went back to friends (after a nap in the car – thank GOD) for more friends and dinner. It was awesome. Will had a buddy to play with and got spoiled rotten by everyone. He partied it up till 9:30 and crashed hard. Then I partied it up till 2 and crashed hard. (you can play the fun game of ‘Who is married to Who’ in this picture…:))
The ‘It’s Morning time’ call came early. Holy crap. Mommy was hungover but rallied! Uncle Ryan was also not feeling 100% but it didn’t stop Will from trying to get him to play. We had breakfast, terrorized the exchange student with threats of more snowshoeing, and headed back to the city. Big nap. Then big dinner with my sister. Will entertained us with his karaoke version of Put Down the Ducky and was pretty stoked to eat ice cream with sparkles on top. We were both sound asleep by 8:30 last night – very contentedly.
There were so many times over the course of the weekend where I looked around and realized how lucky I am. (I know boring common theme here in the last bit…). But honestly. My dad found someone to love after my mom died and I got some more family who I love very much. I have friends who I can count on for anything. They are smart, interesting, supportive and funny…god so funny. And they love me and my kid. And I’m lucky to have one sister who lives close to me and is able to share in the everyday ridiculousness of my kid as he sizzles like bacon or demands to be…well demands everything.
For me, Family Day is the bomb (as you would say Auntie Christie).
And Will woke up this morning and told me that he dreamed about Scotty. And that Scotty was ‘doing his own fings but I love him SO SO much.’ Summed up the weekend quite nicely I thought!
What did you guys get up to??

not at all my friend – I’m finding an inner love for the Bieb…not his music…but the kid.

Ahhh…we had a great weekend. We had the free swim at the local pool put on by Autism Ontario. Great to see all the kids together! My guys had a blast. And I did too.
Monday we took all five of us to go see Justin Bieber: Never Say Never.
We dropped a hundred bucks to see it. And I hope this doesn’t change our relationship – but I quite enjoyed it.

We didn’t get ANY sort of holiday on the West Coast.
Work/school/business as usual.
Soooo lame.

I had an extra long weekend with my kids because my son had a PD Day on Friday!! We played out in the wind!! Went skating (I watched while dad skated with each kid seperately) and got together with all the new babes in our family – have to agree with you – Family Day weekend is our new favourite too!! Did Scotty get his fill of Will while you were away? Was he traumatized of him messing up all his toys!! Poor kiddo – all in the name of fun!

Sounds like an awesome weekend! You are indeed a lucky woman. I want to join your family too. March break St. Paddy’s maybe? And Hillside? I’ve never been and my kids are total campers! You and Will can come on up here for a canoe trip.

That looks SO FUN! Will has the most fun life! I’m jealous!
Sara says
oh a NAP? Is that what they’re calling it these days….:)

Oh, that sounds like SO MUCH fun, lady!! How cool to make a whole weekend out of hanging with everyone… cool!
We don’t recognise “Family Day” in Quebec (le sigh) but since the rest of Canada was off, and the markets in the States were closed due to their holiday, my husband got a day off… we sent the kids to school and spent the morning running some errands and doing some simple grocery shopping – which is a huge treat without the children, you know? We brought sushi home for lunch, and then had a nap until it was time to fetch the Littles again. T’was a good day!! If he can reliably be off on the same day next year, we’ll make better plans – maybe even for the whole weekend!
