I remember the night that Eva was born. I was alone in the room with her. Just looking at her in awe. She was stunning at birth. Perfect doll features and a fuzz of white blonde hair.
I now had my trifecta – the redhead, the brunette and the blondie.
The hair thing took some time.
She was pretty much just fuzz for the first year.
By the time she was two and a half, she had hair. Fantastic baby-mullet hair.
Total business on top, party in the back = bone straight on top, curls in the back
By three and a half she had beautiful curls. I could brush it. Clip it. Braid it. Pony it (1 ponytail), piggie it (2 pigtails).
When there are no tats in it, I could stroke her brush through it all day. I find it very soothing.
Ahhh. Yes…this is what I imagined when looking into her newborn face.
Not soothing is when there are tats in it and she turns into a monster, screaming at me that I’m hurting her. Stop it! Finish already! Aren’t you done yet??? HURRAY UUUUP!
This is a more common occurrence than the soothing brush strokes.
I threaten tell her at least once a day that if she won’t let me brush her hair and take care of it, then we need to go for a haircut. Her reply is always “NO WAY”.
This is where boys are way easier. WAY. (for now, I guess)
I see girls with cute little bob cuts. With bangs. Adorable little hair styles.
I think maybe we should take her to the salon. I ask her and she is adamant that scissors not go near her hair. I am relieved. I love her long hair. She has only had 2 trims since birth (that I gave her with kitchen scissors *gasp*).
I think an actual haircut would change her look. Make her look older, and god knows she’s already growing too fast for my comfort.

M’s hair is like the boreal forest, an inch grown every five years. Still no bangs. As for her first REAL haircut, yesterday in her friend’s bedroom. She got her fragile locks butchered!!!
She said, “Mummy, K didn’t listen to my words, I didn’t want to play” Her pal, still has elbow length hair. Now, she and Auntie Christine can share the family five year old girl Mia Farrow haircut.
I have been sobbing about it for two days. I would laugh it off but M’s regret is so heavy and deep. She is VERY angry with her friend. I’m letting her know her “pixie” cut is very big girl. She is being a super sport about it. My baby looks violated!

LOL My girls were baldy, blondies too. No real length of hair until about 2 1/2 or 3. I got my oldest hair cut at 20 months just to have the scrap of thing for her book.
Started out long with both because IMO you don’t need to run to the salon every 2 minutes. HATE the bowl cut on boys and how they do waaaaaaay too wide bangs on girls.
Youngest had curly hair to start and through all the yealling and screaming and brushing I finally said enough. After threatening her that I would cut it if she didn’t start to take care of it, we cut her hair. No more screaming. She looked AWESOME!!!! and she could take car of it herself. The oldest has for the most part kept it long. We’ve tried straight bangs, no bangs, long, shortish and even cut it to donate for cancer wings. The youngest did this too and ended up with the cutest pixie cut. Soooooo many compliments.
Hair is a powerful thing. Let your child decide (with in reason) on how they like their hair. If she wants to chop it all off, make sure she really wants to…do it in stages. or cut bangs in etc. A little change can make a huge difference.
On the other hand my oldest wants something different every week so even though she has requested I make a salon apt. I am avoiding it, until she comes to some relatively consistent conclusion about a hair stlye. 😉

Outside of a stray knot, Madame hasn’t had her hair cut in her four years yet. It’s curly, but still fine. I love when we get to the conditioner portion of the hair washing (after the complaining and the crying and the pulling though the knots) because I NEVER thought I’d get to play with hair like this in my life – so much fun!
Leave her hair until she asks for the trim… enjoy it. (Gosh, what a precious little girl… and her hair is SO long!!)

My Missy has had 3 haircuts. The first at about 8 months. She’s probably due for a clean-up trim again.
Because she’s mixed, she has enough hair for at least 2 girls & I LOVE it long! It gets braided and/or twisted everyday. Leaving it down is not really an option unless she’s with me all day because it tangles, but I love doing her hair.
I use an organic shampoo, hair conditioner & leave-in oil treatment on her hair & it has made it much more manageable. I also use a detangling spray to help with the brushing through it each day.
At nights sometimes, she brushes mine, which is WONDERFUL!

I loved you saying how soothing you find brushing her hair…I bet (except the tats) she feels the same – I used to get my mom to brush my hair all the time – and you can imagine iwth my hair…I loved it – right up until she died, I’d sit on the floor in front of her and let her go wild with it. Enjoy her hair….:)

I love Eva’s hair! I kept Avelyn’s long until this winter (she is 5 and a half) when she got head lice (GAG!) and we trimmed it into a really cute bob so it’s much easier to manage. She had really tight tendrils that tangled terribly (how’s that for alliteration?) and while I miss those lovely curls, it’s a lot easier to style. I say if she wants to keep it long, then just milk it for as long as possible. 🙂
