As parents we constantly worry about our children. With 6 boys running around I have certainly worried about mine and have spent many days and nights in the Emergency room at our local hospital for various things such as concussions, stitches, asthma attacks, and other various illnesses. A few days ago however it was myself I should have been more concerned about!
One would think that after training in a gym for almost forty hours a week in a high risk sport such a gymnastics during my youth I would have had a few bruises here and there – and I did, however, I had never had a black eye until last Friday!
After dropping the last school age child off at school I did my usual quick spin through at Timmies and then returned home with Thatcher and Tanner. It was at this point that I should have stopped right there and started the whole morning over again!
I took Tanner out of the “bus” and stepped onto here:
I then promptly tripped and fell. Yes while holding Tanner. I was able to pull him closer to my body but he still hit his head on the concrete – thankfully not as much as my head did. He came out with this boo boo on his head:
This was my boo boo:
Ouch indeed. Not only did I have a big goose bump on my head but managed to get a black eye, a serious head ache, nausea, and yes, a concussion. I know right? You did read correctly – a concussion.
Like I’ve said before – the things we do for our kiddies. OI!
Have you ever had a major fall while holding a child or am I just the klutzy mama?
Until next time,

Sometimes I contemplate if folks truly take time to write something original, or are they only just dishing out words to fill a site. This surely doesn’t fit that mold. Thank you for taking the time to write with awareness. From Time To Time I look at a page and question whether they even proofread it.Fantastic work with this article.

I can’t remember having a significant fall holding a child but my husband slipped on the ice and used our 6 year old as a cushion — emergency room, missing tooth, urgent dental x-ray, extra tooth fairy $ – oh, by the way, that was for my son!!

Oh that looks painful. I fell in the middle of the night holding my youngest. I got up to nurse him and was carrying him and then had a dizzy spell and suddenly I hit the wall and then flopped on to the floor. He was latched on the whole time but kind of bit hard on the way down! He was ok but I was a bit shaken.

I slipped down the stairs with baby in hand once – bruised my back pretty good, but I think the baby was fine. Scary as hell though. I didn’t stop shaking for about an hour…
Concussed?! Holy crap!! Poor you – I’m glad you’re going to be okay, though. xox

I fell down the stairs holding my daughter when she was just over a year old. I remember seeing things in slow motion and before I could process what was happening I pulled her towards me just before her head hit the stair and managed to spin myself around so that I fell down on my back. I was relieved that she was okay, but I did end up having back surgery 6 months later! From now on I wear slippers at all times on those stairs!

I can’t believe its the first time either! I fell down the stairs with Will in my arms when he was about four months. I lost it. I put him in the car and drove to a tournament where I knew my mom’s friends were. I walked in and burst into tears – ‘ I dropped the baby’. They got me a stiff drink and convinced me that he was fine!!!

I don’t have children myself, but I work at a swimming pool and we had a dad, a big burly man, slip while stepping into the shallow end of the pool while holding his young infant. The poor man fell backwards while clutching the baby in a football hold and absorbed the fall through his back, which came out looking horribly a few days later. The look on the poor man’s face I will never forget. The poor man was horrified and it took a lot of reassurance to make him confident that his child was alright as he fell backwards and the child was tightly clenched to his chest. It was a huge blow to his confidence, but I’m glad to report that he took it in stride and has been back many times since and his daughter (now about 4) LOVES the water thanks to her daddy’s dedication.
