my engagement ring has sold

August 14, 2011 by Nancy

After splitting up with my former husband, I did not want to wear any of the jewelry he had given me.

He was a big gift giver but I grew to dislike this as it had no substance attached towards the end of our marriage.
I took to wearing costume jewelry  after separating- a tendency I only noticed recently even though it corresponded immediately with our split.
I stopped wearing these almost 5 years ago(engagement, wedding band and eternity ring given to me after our second child was born).

I took all the jewelry and the three rings to a consignment jewelry store. (see 10 nifty things people I have interviewed have done with their wedding rings)
I got a call the other day- someone was interested in my engagement ring- would I sell for a little less?
 Yes.
Apparently the diamond has a chip in it. I honestly don’t remember ever throwing it, biting it or stomping on it.
So the jeweller  took 40% and I got the balance- (hint- it is not very much $)
Any ideas on what I should spend the money on (don’t say heat and light)? I want some good ones.

Interestingly, I have no sadness about this, only a curiosity around its next love story and  the finger it will sit on. Hope it ends better.

Yes, buy something for you! One of those things you’ve been wanting but just couldn’t justifying buying (do you have one of those things?). And then savour every second of it.
I also love bare, hardworking hands. There are few things more beautiful.

    you are cracking me up.
I love that you came up with a memory rather than an item. So very you. The latte ? ! You are killing me.

    all good ideas
In a funny way I like my bare hard working hands. A woman’s hands with no jewelry look childlike in a way. Kind of beautiful.
I thought about a ‘me’ ring but never did it. Maybe will. Don’t want to confuse anyone that I am married though.

a golf weekend with one of your favourite single friends to Blue? …:).
How about a big bash with all your besties.
Life sized poster of George Clooney?
Anything you want baby…you deserve it!!!!!!!
(I could sell my engagement ring and buy a grande latte at Starbucks maybe)

Indeed – something you want, something that will probably last for some years, like a piece of artwork, or even a new piece of jewellery… something you design yourself, maybe?
    YAY FOR YOU!!!

I like the idea of buying something TOTALLY for you. Maybe it’s another piece of jewelry, maybe an iPad. But get something YOU love.

An heirloom piece to pass on to your girls.

I’d put that money into something lasting – maybe a piece of jewelry you love, a piece of art to hang on your wall, something that is for you, forever.

When my parents got divorced 10 years ago my mum took her wedding set to a jeweller and had it made into a new ring – her divorce ring. She wears it on her right hand and it is lovely.
(when he could afford it my dad bought her a beautiful, expensive set to replace the original, affordable set he gave her when she was 18 – I have that original set)
You could buy yourself a nice piece that YOU choose for YOURSELF.
Or buy something pretty for each of the girls…
