Yo! What a weekend. It sucked. And it rocked. At the same time. Here’s why:
My MIL (mother-in-law) arrived on Thursday. That’s good. She’s wonderful. Really! We get along famously, and I always enjoy her company. She helps out around the house, she looks after the kids, she buys us things. Like a trampoline for the kids. It’s coming in 10-15 days! Too bad the snow has arrived again in full force today. Methinks the trampoline will have to remain unassembled for several months, yet, until the fun gets into full swing.
Anyway, back to the weekend. We decided to head out to the mountains for a mini ski getaway. But almost all the hotels in Banff were booked, and the one place in Lake Louise that had enough room for us all was $375 per night, which exceeded even MIL’s budget. So DH had a brainstorm – let’s stay in Canmore. Which we did. It was great. I love Canmore. More than Banff. Really. Go there sometime, and you’ll understand.
Anyway, so let’s move on to the part of the weekend that sucked. I was so busy working Friday (and doing 2 loads of laundry for each kid) that I didn’t really plan out any food to bring with us, and we ended up having to eat breakfast and lunch at the Lake Louise daylodge. $38 for brekkie (thanks Nana!) and $40 for lunch (my treat). And you can multiply those numbers by 100 to get the calorie count. And then pizza in our hotel suite for dinner. This all despite the fact that we had a suite with a mini-kitchen including microwave and fridge. Arrrggh! A little planning would have helped me avoid the 1kg I gained (have I mentioned that my scale switches back and forth between lbs and kgs without notice or any action on my part?).
So, we get back from skiing and go to change into bathing suits so I can take the kids for a swim, and I realize: I forgot my bathing suit. Uh-oh. That’s not good. You see, the swim factor was even more important to the girls than the ski factor. Or the french fries for lunch factor. Ooops. Enter Nana – she takes care of the kids for an hour, and the Hubster and I head out for a shopping trip to the local sporting goods store. He buys undies (yes, he forgot them!) and a really cool t-shirt (I threatened to divorce him if he tried to tuck it in).
And I tried on several bathing suits. Amazingly enough, it was the bikini which I grabbed almost on a self-dare that looked the best. Even according to Hubby! Although I did promise him that I wouldn’t post a picture of myself actually wearing the suit. So here’s a pic of the suit, sans moi:
Okay, the bottoms are the same as the suit on the left, but the top was plain navy, and the same style as this brown suit on the right.
My first-ever grownup bikini! And I wore it in public. And didn’t get arrested. Or funny looks. Or lascivious looks, for that matter. But I did have a very strange dream that night involving a taxi and Rick Mercer. Don’t ask.
Saturday night we set the clocks ahead, and Sunday was a disaster. EVERY one of us was tired. And cranky. And the kids wouldn’t go to the washroom before we left to drive to Banff, so OF COURSE we had an emergency just inside the park gates. But we survived, and arrived in Banff dry enough. We hit the Fudgery (a MUST – but then again, partially to blame for my newest kilogram) and then the Cascade mall. I hit the Gap and drained the gift card my mom gave me for Christmas. I tried on the skinny black pants.
Not so good on me. But I am happy with the baggy "boyfriend trouser" I got instead. And LOVING the size 10 I’m in!
So, in order to maintain the 10 (and shoot for the 8) AND to keep the bikini in the active drawer, I’m gonna put the weekend behind me, and move forward in these, my new running shoes. Because I did it. I registered in a race. Ten kilometres. This fall. So, I’ve gotta get training!

Congrats bikini woman. You totally rock. And major congrats on the 10k commitment. I’ve ballooned to such an unrecognizabel adult self that I ran a marathon last year….very, very slowly…walkers were even passing me, and I only lost 5 pounds in the whole training and running process. I guess I should have given up the junk food as well. Your posts are giving me hope! You will love the 10 k. I promise!

Sandy, I did run in them – today! From the beginning I’ve used this blog partly as a way to hold myself accountable for staying on top of my weight loss, so now I’m going to use it as a way to stay on top of my running goals. Thanks for nudging me!
