As promised, here are the results of our recent Palm sponsored Mother’s Day survey. Thanks to all of you who participated! We had a great response and found out some interesting information. The survey was conducted between April 10-17, 2006 with a sample size of 861 Canadian mothers.
First off, I wanted to highlight a few interesting findings.
- The majority of moms across the country indicated that they consider themselves just as much an individual as they are a mom. This reaffirms what we have been hearing from you! Moms aren’t defined by their motherhood and the women we were before having children have not been left behind. We might not have as much time to focus on these things, but they are still a huge part of who we are.
- Since becoming a mom, many of us feel more hip and cool. Being a mom seems to give us a sense of confidence and community we didn’t feel before having kids.
- Almost 3/4 of urban moms surveyed said they are either completely dependent on technology or consider it a necessary tool. Balancing our busy lives takes creativity and many women are using technology to help. The web is a perfect tool for busy moms offering information available anytime and a way to connect with other moms! Also, moms indicated that a PDA offers flexibility and accessibility and the majority of us feel they offer a more professional appearance while helping get our families organized.
The results of our Mother’s Day survey demonstrate that modern moms mesh the old and new to create a new approach to motherhood:
- More than 55 percent of urban moms said they are just as much their own person as they are a mother.
- 40 percent of urban moms feel they have become cooler since having kids.
- Out of a pool of celebrity mothers including Angelina, Gwyneth, Madonna, and Sarah McLachlan, more than 60 percent of urban moms surveyed said they most admire their own mother – and almost 40 percent have caught themselves quoting her.
- Since becoming a mom, almost 75 per cent of respondents said they are either completely dependent on technology or consider it a necessary tool – while only 21 percent say their relationship with technology has remained the same as in pre-motherhood.
- In those rare kid-free moments, almost 60 percent of urban moms would prefer to do yoga, exercise or go out for a last minute evening with friends, instead of with their partner.
- More than half (56 percent) of respondents wish they had a personal assistant to organize their life – and their family.
- More than 60 percent of urban moms consider outside connection to friends or community either a priority or very important.
- The majority of urban moms stay connected via email, phone or face-to-face interaction with friends.
Happy Mother’s Day!

Tabitha,
I don’t tend to share links as it gets pretty overwhelming for our members. Also, I clicked on the link and the site was not found.
Please email me at jen@urbanmoms.ca if you want to discuss.
Thanks.

Hello,
I was wondering if you could add a link to our blog on your site for the awareness of this scourge.

“When a woman has children she doesn’t magically conform to a one-dimensional world of motherhood. Moms are individuals and the women they were before having children have not been left behind. Their worlds have expanded and the need for information and knowledge has increased. Each mother has a unique approach to parenting, to consumerism, and to life. At urbanmoms.ca we commit to sharing our opinions and expertise by respecting our differences. There are many perspectives and views and we encourage you to contribute while keeping an open mind. Enjoy! ”
