Although my girls are so called identical twins, they look quite different, to me anyway. Everyone always says that Sophie looks just like me. It’s funny that one identical twin would look like me, and not so much the other one. What do you think? Mini me or no?
Here’s one of the three of us. Sophie on your left and Fiona on your right. Does Sophie look more like me? Do they look identical to you? Hmmm.
I’ve been fascinated by genetics since I first read about Mendel. I remember learning about the concept of dominant and recessive genes and being amazed by my blue eyes and blond hair (it darkened up as I aged). All three of us had the blue blond combo which only our mom has. Effing incredible. In University my breadth science course was called “The Genetic Revolution”, and I loved it. Sometimes I wish I had studied biology….alas, it was Political Science (which I also loved!).
Twins are fascinating in so many ways. In biology and social sciences. I’m very lucky that I have two fabulous little girls whom I love dearly and who bring me delight every day, but I also am fascinated by their development. Beyond what I think I would be with a singleton. The key is to keep the comparisons in my head. I’m looking forward to thinking and writing more about twinniness.
Here is a super cute twin photo to leave you with.
What about your kids? Twins or singletons. Do they favour you or your spouse? Or are they an even mix?

Wow Ali, she is the spitting image of your mom! Amazing.

Oh Tracey, I forgot that I was going to write about my babysitter’s family. I had a babysitter when I was young and she was medium dark skinned, I don’t know if I knew her ethnicity but I would maybe say West Indian, but I was a kid so I can’t be sure. Anyway, her husband was strawberry blond and very fair. They had two girls, one was quite dark skinned, with kinky hair and the other was very fair skinned with blond kinky hair. It was so amazing to me that they could be sisters, astounding really. Genetics = fascinating!

I’m with you on the lips too. Mine are so thin they’re practically non existent, I defo got ripped off in the gene department on that one!

genetics are soooo funny.
check this out, it might blow your mind…

Sara – I’m with you on the lips…I’d love to just *try* it but I’m afraid I’d look like Pete Burns.
My sisters both have nice lips. Sean has amazing lips – I think all 3 kids got his. I hope.
Christine says
Erin, people still comment when they meet my sisters how different we are from one another. You wouldn’t peg us as sisters.
We are all different heights, body shapes, facial features, eye colour. My sisters are both blonde (one sandy, one dark) and I’m red.
I love that my kids are so different from each other and how the gene pool is so spread out between everyone.

First of all, these pics are just too cute, Erin! Yes, I think they both favour you, and they look similar, but not exactly identical. Yes, genetics are freaking wild! (I’ve ALWAYS been fascinated with twins too… even double-yolk eggs make me inappropriately giddy – don’t ask me why.)
Our kids are bi-racial – Oliver is darker, and he looks more like me, but he “feels” more like my husband. Madame is quite fair, and she has my nose, but she looks more like Martin, I think. But she’s a pistol. *ahem* I’ll be very interested to see how they change over the years… and what their kids might be like, should either of them have any.
Sara says
Yup – I picked Sophie out in that picture with all of you and she does look like you!
Will has a ton of similarity to my sister and her son – but not so much me. But in my family, my brother and I look a lot alike and my two sisters look a like. I have a baby picture of his donor and I don’t see any similarity at all…but he must have his big beautiful lips becasue my family is a bunch of thin lips…and Will has a beautiful pair (the kind that I may get with injecitons one day…I KID!)

Josee,
I still think your girls look very much alike, although I haven’t seen them in quite awhile. They are both gorgeous!
Erin Little says
Christine, your kids all look so different from one another in the photos, it’s amazing isn’t it how genes play out. Of course, it might change as they get older. I remember not thinking I looked like my sister when we were kids but now when I look at photos, especially from when we were adults, we really did look alike. Do other people think you and your sisters look alike?
Josee says
I love this article, when my girls were little, they look more alike and now they have different style and all and poeple always tell me, one looks like me and one looks like dad. I just think it`s unbeleivable!
Christine says
It’s tough to say in just photo’s but I can see how the girls are identical yet different.
I think they both favour you.
I’ve always said that my kids are like fingerprints and snowflakes – no 2 are alike.
I have a redhead, a brunette and a blonde.
The redhead is freckled. The brunette has lovely olive skin. And the blonde is fair skinned.
I would say that Cam takes after me in looks. Cuyler is very much my father-in-laws side and I think Eva is more my mums side.
So I have a whole jumble.
Interestingly enough – I have 2 sisters and none of us look alike. At all.
