Meet Walter

March 6, 2012 by Christine

Last month Cuyler went to a birthday party and they saw The Muppets.  He has loved them ever since.  He actually found his very own little muppet-brother – just like Walter, who he did everything with. They watched tv together, they ate together

Cuyler even made him his very own to bed sleep in at the foot of his own bed. He’s such a good big brother…

We thought that this is something we might be able to use to reign him back in with the diet.
After the virus that took him out for nearly 2 weeks, we had a difficult time getting back to him being willing to try new foods.
At this point – I am not above bribery or threats.  So we came up with a plan.
Cuyler put his muppet brother to bed last Friday night and Saturday morning woke up to this at the foot of his bed:

Cuyler was thrilled. HIS OWN WALTER.  His own REAL muppet-brother!!
Walter came with a note…

Cuyler was beyond excited. Walter did not leave his side all day Saturday and Sunday.
We really love having Walter in our home. He’s pretty special.
We almost lost him, though.
Cuyler had a huge meltdown Sunday and kicked Sean and threw my laptop on the floor. Walter left. He didn’t want a big brother who behaved that way. It scared him. So he left.
Yesterday, Cuyler told us that he missed Walter so much and that he would always be a good big brother.  He wanted to try new food.
He ate 2 strawberries. OMG!!!
He took all of his medication without question – 7 pills in all.  AND…and…he ate TWO full plates of lasagna. We ate the same meal as a family of 5 yesterday. I honestly do not remember the last time that happened.
It was so special that Walter came back. He wants to be a part of our family so bad that he came back. Cuyler found him tucked into his bed last night. Cuyler was so happy to see him that he upgraded Walter’s bed from laundry basket to double bed.

Fortunately Cam likes Walter.  We all do.
Welcome home Walter! We hope you never have to leave again!

wow that is great Christine! I have tried many forms of bribery with Joshua in order to help him over come his sensory issues regarding food – unfortunately Joshua never got the help he should have until he was almost 9 – by then it was too late he had already set his mind up regarding the whole issue of food and his sensory issues just got worse. Psychologists, OT, etc.. haven’t been able to unlock that door yet. Sigh. I hope his new big brother continues to help him along his path:)
