There’s nothing I enjoy more in the winter than some freshly baked bread. And I love to make it myself….it tastes great, it’s inexpensive, and it makes the house smell so wonderful. I have tried many, many recipes, but there’s one I just love so much. It’s a little bit (read: a lot) sweet, but it’s so delicious. And the entire family LOVES it. It’s slightly time-consuming and you need to NOT be afraid of yeast (many of my friend are!) but, I assure you, if you try it, you will love it enough to make the effort to make it!
1 pkg. yeast
4 cups flour
3/4 stick margarine
3/4 cup sugar + 1 tsp.
1 cup warm water
1 tsp. salt
In a large stainless steel bowl, dissolve yeast into warm water and and add 1 tsp sugar until it bubbles
add eggs, margarine and sugar and salt.
braid. cover with damp towel.
let rise 1.5-2 hours until doubles in size.
brush with egg yolk and optional topping (equal parts sugar, flour and margarine, mix together with fork until it crumbles)
bake at 375 about 30-40 minutes.

There is nothing more delicious than a fresh slice of challah. I have made my own challah, but haven’t been thrilled with the results. I would like to try your recipe and hope to have better success. I also love raisins challah, unfortunately my kids prefer their challah plain.
