luck

We all know that the husband and i are polar opposites. (cue the horrible paula abdul dance moves now…a possible video of the day?) you name it, we disagree on it. usually. we did, however, discover a new show – The Black Donnelly’s – that we both heart very much (but you would never catch him using the word heart to describe anything…)

we also are different in another way. he’s lucky. i’m not. this one is not something we can change. it’s fact. he always wins door prizes. at work. at auctions. at charity events. he walks home with the coffee mugs and the desk organizers and the mp3 players and walkie talkies. he wins at backgammon, every time we play, because he rolls doubles on almost every turn (guess who NEVER rolls doubles?) He rules at Risk for the same reason. he gets the sixes…while i’m left with the ones and twos. bah. He wins at War in Vegas. like $200 each time he plays. he just gets the good cards. also, he gets sent free things in the mail – last year, for NO reason, Xbox sent him a free FIFA game. just like that. for free. he traded it in, since he already had it, for his GOW. he gets bumped from flights and then gets $500, just like that. i get bumped from a flight and get jack. i’m lucky i even get home.

i never win anything. i mean, sure, i once won a cd from the cactus. and when i was a kid, i won a $50 gift certificate to this crappy store in Bayshore Mall for guessing how many jelly beans were in a jar (and i bought myself a clock that had a giant flamingo on it. i kid you not. i was such a dumbass in those days). but…that’s it. i’ve never won anything. i’m NOT lucky.

so, it really should come as no surprise to me that when we pulled up to the Tim Hortons drive-through this afternoon, and we both ordered the same coffee….that when he rolled up his rim to win, he actually won…and i didn’t. he actually handed me the first cup and said, "here’s yours. you didn’t win anything" and then he took the second and said "and here’s mine. the one with the free cup of coffee in it." it wasn’t until 20 minutes later, when we’d finished out cups, that he was able to prove he was right. i had little doubt, though. it wasn’t anything exciting, a free cup of coffee…but a free coffee is better that one you have to pay for, i always say. AND in the last 4 days, he’s won three free cups of coffee. where’s the justice?
