The uber perma-tanned and most loveable George Hamilton is in town with the cast of La Cage Aux Folles for the next few weeks entertaining the crowds at Mirvish’s Royal Alexandra Theatre. The musical is based on a book by Harvey Fierstein with music and lyrics by Jerry Herman. You may also know the story line as it was adapted to the big screen – The Bird Cage starring Robin Williams and Nathan Lane.
The story tells the tale of a gay couple who owns and performs at a glitzy nightclub below their apartment. Georges (George Hamilton) and his partner Albin (Christopher Sieber) raises a son who is engaged to a woman and feels the need to hide his family situation from his fiancee’s very conservative yet high profile family.
Story line is predictable but in case you don’t know it..then I won’t give it away!
Hamilton and Sieber, along with the cast, are very entertaining! Toronto’s own Jeigh Madjus steals the show with his over the top antics as the maid-and-wannabe showgirl.
The audience at La Cage Aux Folles on opening night was a mixture of older generations and young theatre lovers. Opening night also introduced the super funny Lili Whiteass (Todd Lattimore) who greeted theatre attendees at the door as well as treating the audience to a “no-holds-barred” pre-show performance that had the crowd laughing! Not sure if my mom understood ALL his/her jokes but she loved meeting her/him in person! You should have seen her face light up! Priceless!
The classic comedy musical is glitzy and wonderfully tacky. Go and embrace it for what it is – A night of pure entertainment!
The 2010 Tony Award Winning La Cage Aux Folles is at the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto until November 18, 2012. For ticket information please visit www.mirvish.com Catch it before it moves on!
Oh..and check out this clip from opening night…look who’s in it! heh heh!

Great to see George Hamilton still has his tan after all those decades. Sounds like going to see this is such a fun time!
