Dominic Monaghan on LA Ink

August 16, 2010 by Unknown

It’s funny that it’s all tattoo talk across the interwebs this week because lately I have become kind of obsessed with tattoos. I have always really wanted to have one but there were/are just so many things holding me back. I worry about permanently branding myself with something that I may hate in five months from now. I mean, you guys, have trouble choosing a lunch item off a menu, how could I choose a tattoo?

Also, you know, what if I pulled a Hayden Panettiere and misspelled my tattoo:

There are too many Is in her “Vivere senza rimipianti” (“Live without regrets” in Italian) tattoo. The word is actually “rimpianti”.
OOPS.
Or what if I pulled a Rihnna and had a grammar fail on my tattoo:

because they are saying that the French for “rebellious flower” would actually be fleur rebelle and not rebelle fleur.
OOPS.
Sometimes, though, people get it right. like Dominic Monaghan. I kind of adore him in general, and not just because he was one of my favorite characters to ever be on television (Hello, Charlie from LOST!), but he just seems like someone I’d want to be friends with in real life, even just based on his tats.
He – along with seven other castmates from Lord of the Rings – has the Tengwar word for “nine” written on his right bicep, in reference to the fact that he was one of the nine members of the fellowship of the ring. He also has a tattoo that reads “life imitates art” which is an Oscar Wilde quote. He also has tattoos of two Beatles’ quotes: “Living is easy with eyes closed, misunderstanding all you see” and “Love you take is equal to the love you make.”
So, it really comes as no surprise to me that I am absolutely in love with Dominic’s newest tattoo, one he got on the 4th season premiere of the reality show LA Ink.
His newest one? It’s a quote from Yoda. Yes, THAT Yoda!

“Luminous being are we, not this crude matter.”

LOVE.
He explains his motivation for this particular inking…

“In the past four or five years or so, I’ve gotten more and more into the idea that this [gestures to his body] is essentially just a shell for what we’re trying to achieve. I think the quote is something that will resonate with me for the rest of my life, because I do think that the body we sit in is a shell for the important thing that’s really happening inside.”

And was he happy with it??
“It looks kind of gnarly… I was blown away by it to be honest,” he says.
As for a tattoo for me, I think I’d go the way of a Beatles quote over Yoda…but you NEVER know…

The Tattoo of him is really great I like the way the skin is supposed to peal of. You can tell that Kat von D did his tattoo, because no other tattoo artist can do such gorgeous shades.

I feel like you are IN MY BRAIN RIGHT NOW because I was just! reading about his tattoos a few days ago after watching him in the new Eminem/Rihanna video (Hi, sexy), and because, like you, I’ve been a HUGE fan of his ever since he showed up as “Merry” in LOTR. Charlie was one of my favorite characters on LOST, and the fact that I don’t get to see him every week again in a new show (that I happened to love) alongside Joseph Fiennes (YES PLEASE) was the main reason I was super bummed about Flash Forward being canceled.
I love tattoos. For many reasons, not the least of which being they are amazing ways to express your creativity and individuality, and to forever pay tribute to a time in your life worth remembering. I love the stories behind tattoos, and the tattoos with absolutely no story beyond, “I just did it. And I don’t know why. And I love it.”
I have five right now, and actually have my latest artist (who looks like she belongs on LA Ink: http://www.icontattoostudio.com/silje.html) sketching a sixth tattoo for me right now. It will be my biggest yet, and while I’m still deciding placement (sometimes placement is harder to decide than the actual art you want inked), I’m so excited about it, and think this one might push me over the edge into bigger/edgier/maybe even cap sleeve territory. I’m honestly psyched. I think tattoos (on women especially) are beautiful. And I love mine.
And clearly I had a lot to say about this topic! (I also totally dig Dominic’s lyric-inspired tattoos. I definitely want a line of text, but that for me will be the most difficult tattoo of all, I think. I love too many words, too many books and stories and single lines, to choose.)

I have SO MANY IDEAS! I’m going to have a hard time deciding which to start with. Among them are a Celtic knot, designed to look as if it’s carved from granite, worn like an old headstone, with a blue morning glory vine wrapped around it – a stained glass window, like a rose window in a cathedral, but with the Tree of Life as the artwork – a blue heron, done like a watercolor painting – all of which have special meaning to me, of course. And I’m with Carrie – I don’t care if it winds up a little faded and saggy down the road, the meaning is still the same.

I got a very primitive tatoo at a very young age, yet was smart enough to hide it where no one other than a dr or my significant other would see it. Then 20 years later I had it re done to look nice, and still I forget it’s there. But it will always be there, to remind me of that period of my life and what has driven me. It’s like a small part of my soul, but only the ones I want will ever see it.

I truly believe that the first one is the hardest for people to decide on but once they do it…they are hooked! I have a total of 6 tattoos…my 6th one is in progress, when it is done it will be a 3/4 arm sleeve.
With the exception of my first tattoo they are all very very symbolic to me
    – a dragonfly that represents a free spirit
    – cherry blossoms (AKA my divorce tattoo) “nothing in life is certain except change”
    – A “B” on my ring finger , my engagement tattoo
    – An “X” on my neck…standing for Xanadu a very special nickname
    – and my arm…an array of flowers all that mean something very unique (strength, beauty, love, maternal love, forgiveness)
They tell my story. They are a reminder to me everyday of where I was, what I have been through and finally now where I am! I have not regretted them for one second.
And yeah when I am 60 they will not look the same but when my grandchild crawls up on to my lap and asks “What does that mean grandma?” I will have a beautiful story to tell for each….
I say go for it!! 🙂

    I have 3 tattoos.
They all represent something that will always part of who I am:
-I am of Irish descent (I am first generation Cdn)
-I will always be my childrens mother.
