while we at urbanmoms.ca are mostly meme-free, occasionally something comes my way that i cannot overlook. And when it’s Veronica Mitchell and it has to do with snogging and literary characters…we exercise our rights to the mostly part of mostly meme-free. (we are meme-light, if you will)
Ten Literary Characters I Would Totally Make Out With If I Were Single and They Were Real But I’m Not, Single I Mean, I Am Real, But I’m Also Happily Married and Want to Stay That Way So Maybe We Should Forget This….
(i mean, honestly, how can i not partake in this?)
here’s a list of mine…just for the record…this took me FOREVER to come up with and even still…one is a nonfictional character, one is many characters and one is not really a character at all…
1. Ponyboy Curtis. The Outsiders. He likes sunsets. and books. and a greaser.
2. Tyler Durden. Fight Club. antihero. anti-consumerism. makes soap.
3. Rhett Butler. Gone With the Wind. frankly, he doesn’t give a damn. he likes strong-willed, stubborn, alpha-women. makes things happen; doesn’t just sit back and watch.
4. Lorenzo Carcaterra. Sleepers. (he’s not really fictional…but the book is not 100% nonfiction…) i love him though. he’s tortured, troubled, grew up in hell’s kitchen…but he’s smart and sexy and would go to the end of the earth for his friends.
5. Jay Gatsby. The Great Gatsby. charmer and recluse. he’s kind of, sort of, an ass…but a sexy ass, nonetheless.
6. Zooey. Franny and Zooey. loves his sister. he is the blue-eyed Jewish-Irish Mohican scout who died in your arms at the roulette table at Monte Carlo.
7. Prince Charming. various fairy tales. is there any female out there who doesn’t want her very own prince charming? handsome. romantic. heroic.
8. Mr. Darcy. Pride and Prejudice. this one needs no explanation, i’m assuming. he should show up on everyone’s list. he’s moody and broody….but there’s no one sexier.
9. Noah Calhoun. The Notebook. he reads their story to his wife when she can’t remember. *sniffle* he IS unconditional love.
10. Odysseus. The Odyssey. HOT. hero. smart. enjoys women. courageous. strong.
who would make your list? who wouldn’t?

mr. darcy is my number one book crush – i still remember the first time i read P&P, I went back and highlighted many of his smoldering lines…latest book lover was Kavalier from Michael Chabon’s “the Amazing Adventures of kavalier and clay”, many of the same smokin’ qualities of my Mr. D but with generous doses of artistic genius thrown in.

Rourke in JD Robb’s “in death” series. Love him… If they ever turned it into a movie, who could play the Irish dreamboat???
Kath says
Of course Mr. Darcy is well up on everyone’s list (as he should be)! In all his incarnations, as well (I’m thinking Colin Firth…Bridget Jones…)
One cannot forget Mr. Rochester either (I see Heidi & Lavendula got him, too).
I had a really big crush on Henry VIII (not the real historical figure but his literary counterpart) when I first read The Other Boleyn Girl, and then it was Robert Dudley in Philippa Gregory’s The Queen’s Fool.
Ahh…I sure am a sucker for the old-fashioned type!

For me it is Jamie Fraser from Diana Gabaldon’s series that starts with Outlander. he is strong, fearless, loyal, and makes my heart and everything beat faster. Wow, a manly man. Yoohoo.
haley-o says
hoe ’bout Clive Owen? does he count?? 😉
Haley says
i just started reading the Odyssey in English!

The most memorable romantic character of recent memory for me is Grant in Alice Munro’s “The Bear Came Over the Mountain” which was recently adapted into the movie “Away From Her” produced by Sarah Polley. It is kind of the Notebook like character but less Hollywood. He is fallible and made mistakes but his love for his wife is heartwrenching.
But if we’re talkin’ snogging and not romantic lurve that’s a different story. My very first book-crush would have been in my teens and it was Jondalar from Clan of the Cave Bear 😉 The most recent would be Jamie in Outlander.
Not exactly fine literature!
ali says
ah…zooey…be still my heart. 🙂
Beck says
Oh, Zooey. I can’t believe I left Zooey off my list.
LAVENDULA says
this was fun Ali.Heathcliff-Wuthering Heights Mr.Darcy-pride&prejudice Legolas-Lord of the rings Eric-the crow(i know its a comic bok)Pedro-Like Water for Chocolate Hawkeye-Last of the Mohicans King Arthur(take your pick of book)Edward Rochester-Jane Eyre Lestat-Interview with the Vampire. and last my very own Prince Charming my honey.
Tova says
Mine? Definitely the Prince Charming type. Handsome, thoughtful, caring, devoted and who, of course, thinks I’m #1 🙂
Heidi says
Mr. Darcy is so at the top of my list (always, always, Mr. D!!).
Pretty much all of the Jane Austen men – well with the exception, of course, of Mr. Wickham and the minister guy from P & P. I’d even snog that bad guy from S & S – only ’cause I have a huge crush on the actor who played him in the movie.
Always had a thing for neurotic, brainy, Jewish epononmous protagnonist in Joshua Then and Now by Mordechai Richler.
And of course, how can we forget John Galt and Howard Roark from Atlast Shrugged and The Fountainhead – hey both in architecture/urban planning/railroads, etc. – right up my alley!
