So what do hockey players and ice cream cartons have in common? Better when they’re cold? Favourite guilty pleasures? Best when their top’s off? I’ll leave the punchline to you, but last week I was treated to a combination of both at the launch of Ben & Jerry’s newest flavour.
Jerry Greenfield himself (yes, one half of the greatest ice cream duo from Vermont) was on hand to announce that portions of the sale from “Caramel Hat Trick” will support grassroots hockey across the country through the NHLPA’s charitable fund.
Also on hand? NHL players Luke Schenn, Jason Spezza, John Tavares and Steve Stamkos, all famous hockey players, ice cream lovers and very nice guys who were “drafted” to taste the product and promote the collaboration. (As a side note, not only were these guys as sweet and wholesome as the ice cream itself, you’ll notice that not a single one was sporting the traditional hockey hair of yore).
The NHLPA’s Goals & Dreams Foundation is obviously a charity close to their hearts. They all spoke glowingly about the support they’d received from family and community when they were growing up. They talked about how the Goals & Dreams foundation is a way for the players to give back something to the game. Over the past 10 years, more than 40,000 kids in 22 countries have benefited from the players’ donation of hockey equipment.
So after some serious ogling, what’s a girl to do? When in doubt, dig in to the ice cream.
Caramel Hat Trick’s a yummy combination of caramel ice cream with a caramel swirl and fudge covered caramel chunks. Kind of what you’d call a diet-killer, but worth it for its creamy sweetness! Also, the fact that you’re helping out deserving kids when you buy a pint should more than cancel out any guilt you might have. Do it for the kids!
