Me, too. I am hungry ALL THE TIME, lately. I’ve got a bag of chocolate chip oatmeal cookies beside me as I type this. Why? Well, I injured my knee doing trail-running hills, my mum is going through some stressful stuff, and I changed my workout focus to yoga, rowing and low-impact cardio which means I’m building different muscles. Stress + body repair + muscle building = more cookies please! (Though chocolate covered almonds would taste MUCH better, right now….)

Thanks, I wish I had heard of it 15 years ago when I spend 7 hours a week at the gym so my custom cashmere suit fit beautifully until I would get buried in work or a cold and sack on 7 (no kidding yup, ) pounds in 1 week with the same diet but less caloric spend and hating it.
Hating self is totally useless.
Loving self is totally useful.
🙂
Plus I am also guessing high stress levels monkey with my hormones hug and cause my metabolism to grind to a halt.

Oh Nancy, you are so not alone.
I used to be a MIND OVER BODY believer…now I am reconsidering…
When I was a regular runner, I was hungry a lot too. And the cravings were unpleasant.
Now that yoga is my main form of conscious exercise, and I leave the rest to keeping up around the kids and house, my appetite and weight only yoyo’s when I excess in foods that my body type clearly cannot tolerate well (dairy and white starch and white sugars). Moderation even seems to aggravate my system to want more.
10 years ago a work colleague girlfried always said goodbye leaving work for the gym saying: “I’m off to fight the gene demon”. I had no idea what she meant back then.
Not to sound too radical however Gary Taubs, a science writer firmly believes that exercise, though full of happy endorphins, dose not lead to weight loss long term nor healthy body weight over the long run.
He believes that most body types will simply require more calories and when it is deprived over time, the body rebounds with the self-preservation mechanism and starts to become calorie miser and the cravings rise. He says you can’t refute that some people never exercise hard and despite a high calorie diet, remain super or quite thin.
He does believe in a good amount of normal lifestyle activity but he believes partly that genetics dictate a good deal on how our body uses fuel when pushed to expend fuel and also that different food types impact the hormonal/systemic processes in the body in a favourable way or a highly unfavourable way.
I just got back my 23andMe DNA testing results and it shows because of my 100% Euro genes, I have one particular gene trait that they say on average keeps 6.6 pounds of “bonus” weight on my body, “for insurance” and is calorically very spend stingy.
At least I know it’s less a question of my discipline as it is my body wanting what it was evolutionarily designed to want. Now it becomes a decision as to what matters more, some indulgence every now and again or my best figure with lots of effort and restraint.
French women don’t run either so I am guessing there must be somehting to it 🙂
So now I run when I want to just to make sure my ticker can take it and because I need the endorphines but I no longer run for body fitness. Just for fun.
For what it’s worth…
