I should be sleeping

August 2, 2013 by Alanna 3 Comments

OK so I’m a month in on baby #2 and I am utterly exhausted. Breastfeeding is a workout and I’m only getting two and a half hours of solid sleep at a time. Clearly the Hubs and I didn’t think this through (I’m joking of course!). Fortunately I’m taking it easy and not beating myself up like I did the first time around.

A few weeks after having L’il E I wrote this post. I was feeling guilty for taking time out, resting and enjoying my new little babe. Minutes later a more experienced friend of mine sent me an email to set me straight. I’ve been holding on to this note for over two years and I pulled it up the other day just as a refresher.

So if there are any new moms out there feeling guilty for lounging around – DON’T! This is me sharing my friend’s advice to you, so listen up.

For the first 6 – 10 weeks of bringing a baby home you are truly in survival mode. In the olden days we would have had the entire village cooking, cleaning and helping us. These days you are lucky if you have a visit from mom and some friends dropping off some potluck. Your body is getting used to WAY less sleep and the fact that you are a hormonal basket case. You NEED to take all the sleep you can get, and if you are lucky you can catch a good 3 hours during the day (as long as you don’t have any other children). If you waste this sleep, you will make this time SO much harder than it needs to be and you will miss all of the lovely  moments that your little babe can offer you because you will be too tired to see them, or too busy to notice them.

Take advantage of this time! REST! SLEEP! LOUNGE!

DO NOT:
– clean
– do laundry
– bake
– entertain
– exercise

Seriously, on top of everything it’s just not healthy.

If anyone judges you for looking different or acting different, for REAL tell them to F themselves.

Also don’t forget, the celebrities who look ‘fab’ after having kids also have a nanny, chef, personal trainer and personal assistant. It’s a bit easier to rock it when you are actually only taking care of your baby 3 hours a day.

Relax and enjoy it.

I hope you can share this with your friends too 🙂

I’m on baby number 4 and I still feel guilty for sitting down! I feel SO unproductive. But I’m working on it. I’m trying to savour the snuggles with my last baby 🙂
