OK, I took a week off blogging because I PROMISED my two boys (one big, one little) I’d be devoted only to them. But, the week is up and I can’t wait to share.
Well, that’s a lie. I can wait to share this info…however in the interest of being honest, transparent, and SUPER nosey about other people, I am going to bite the bullet and tell you all about my pregnancy weight gain.
Now, you may remember, my first sign of pregnancy, after the wart of course, was that I couldn’t do up a skirt I had worn about a week before. Needless to say, I’ve gained weight way faster and become way thicker then I ever did with pregnancy #1. I am shocked at how fast it has shown in my waist- actually, what waist? The smallest part of me has now ballooned out to enormous proportions making me look like I literally swallowed a beach ball. Except it’s the kind of beach ball that is slightly deflated, making me just look…ginormous.
On December 23rd I went for my 4 month check-up at my OBGYN. She’s so great. But she makes me get on the scale. And she never really says much about my weight because she knows that I’m as healthy as I can possibly be (read: I eat the best food that my body will allow to be digested). She also knows that, while I don’t work out while pregnant (I’ll blog about that another time), I am never sitting and doing nothing. I wish, but I’m not. So, she weighed me and here’s where I’m gonna get really really honest.
I’m 5’6″. The smallest I’ve ever been was on my wedding day- I was 129 pounds and my wedding dress was a size 0/2. I was also very hungry and grumpy, but that’s another story for another day.
I am normally anywhere between 135-145 pounds and wear a size 4/6. That’s my background. When I got pregnant with Baby #2, I weighed 145 pounds. I was in a comfortable size 6, Bootycamp had put a ton of muscle on me so while I was at the higher end of my weight, I was looking as good as ever.
I am now….157 pounds. YES, at 4 months pregnant I have managed to gain 12(!) pounds of pure baby fat (right?? It’s all the baby…tell me I’m right!). I am actually wearing my maternity clothes from my first pregnancy- the ones I didn’t have to wear until I was at least 6 months pregnant last time. The ones that will probably all be too small in the next 2 months.
I don’t really know how I feel about it. On one hand, I know I haven’t been indulging too badly. I’m too sick (still) to eat a lot. However, I also know that my goal of gaining less then 40 pounds this pregnancy is looking bad because, let’s face it, the bigger you get, the easier it is to just eat the junk. I know from experience (and the 40 pounds I gained last pregnancy- 25 of those came in the last three months!).
Luckily, I don’t weigh myself at home and, if I ever was seriously disturbed by my pregnancy weight I wouldn’t even look at the doctor’s office. As a general rule I’m not that worried about what I weigh, as long as the baby is healthy… nonetheless… 12 pounds…
So tell me people, am I doomed to gain huge?? Did you notice a difference in your weight gain during your second pregnancy versus your first?? Any tips of curbing (but, believe me, I’m not dieting. I’m not crazy- nor do I desire the diet…that torture is saved for after the baby) the gain or does our body just gain what it gains?
PS- when you see a celebrity with a teeny tiny baby bump and an otherwise perfect body, don’t you just wanna HURL?

Val- you win for the nicest comment I’ve ever gotten!!! xoxo
Thanks everyone else- you’re totally right! I need to not be stressed about gaining and just enjoy the fact that I CAN gain weight! I’m just so shocked at how fast I’m gaining it!

I gained WAY faster with my second baby, but overall gained about 15-18 pounds less in the end. It all came off exactly the same way it did with my first. I say don’t worry about the weight, if you know you are healthy then so is the baby and you’ll both be fine. Enjoy it as much as you can.

Don’t sweat it Sarah! When you feel bad…just think of Christine…I”M KIDDING!!! Seriously – it’s all a means to an end…you’ll take it off after the baby is born and you’ll look back like Ali and think ahhhh I could gain guilt free – and you should. I only gained 25lbs but Will was even tinier than Desi’s boy at 5lb and did fall right out almost. But I wasn’t trying at all to not gain – people’s bodies are just different. My friend just had a baby and people didn’t know she was pregnant…the lack of gain was a whole other set of worries. You’re beautiful at a 2..4..6..14… hang in there and stay off the scales…(I don’t own one…they just stress you out!)

When I was pregnant with my daughter, I lost weight during the first trimester and then just BALLOONED for the last seven months (yes, she was two weeks overdue – blagh). With my son, I gained weight during the first six months, and then lost weight during the last two. My daughter was huge at birth (8 lbs, 10 oz, 37 cm head). My son was small enough to literally fall out onto the table (6 lbs, 15 oz, 34 cm head). Either way, I was still competing for largest land mammal by delivery day. Try not to stress about it. Eat whatever you want, even if it’s junk food. I was so sick with both of my kids that we lived on big servings of whatever would stay down. Growing a person is tough stuff. Much tougher than losing the weight later.

sometimes I wish I was pregnant so I could feel not-an-ounce of guilt about gaining weight.
AND I DIDN’T. I gained weight. and I didn’t care. I figured that I would worry about it once I wasn’t pregnant anymore. It was the one (well, three) time in my life that I let whatever worked work…and sometimes that meant eating 4 meals a day and 4 desserts.
Don’t worry about it. Your body is MAKING A PERSON. Listen to it. Worry about it later!

I gained 15lbs in the first trimester! I ended up close to 50lbs up. And my babies were not big AT ALL. However, I eventually lost it all. My body changed but I barely think now about how huge I was then.
It is the only time in your life you can gain weight and have a really good reason. Enjoy!

Do you know, I gained the same with both pregnancies, but I looked totally different. AND: I gained at totally different frequencies (as in, I gained a lot more early on the second time). So…you never know!

I am 5’2″
I weighed about 105 when I got pregnant with my first. I weighed 170 – yes – ONE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY pounds when I delivered. There are NO photo’s of me because I looked RIDICULOUS. I sent my sister a video of when Cam was born and she said she cried when she saw what I looked like. It was that bad.
It got to a certain point where I just got on the scale backwards and didn’t look. Couldn’t look. I knew I was gigantic. I didn’t need to know the number.
It took me 9mos to get back down to my prepreg weigh – I got it all off. And a week after I was in my skinny jeans I found out I was pregnant again…
Give yourself a break. With my consecutive pregnancies the weight went on sooner but I never gained as much. In fact I gained less and less.
I have a feeling you’ll gain more in the beginning and plateau toward the end.
Don’t sweat it and enjoy the pregnancy!
As far as celebs – I always wonder how Victoria Beckham grew 3 babies inside that itty bitty body…
