Big Bear keeps hearing the voice of Old Man Winter, who is trying to tell him it’s time to go to sleep for the season. Only trouble is, Big Bear doesn’t hear very well, and though he dutifully keeps trying to follow the instructions he thinks he’s being given, he’s hearing it all wrong.
This is perfect humour for toddlers and preschoolers, who find it hilarious when someone is getting it all wrong and they know better. add to this a gentle rhythm and a sleepy ending, and it makes for perfect cozy bedtime reading.
Will Hillenbrand’s illustrations fit this blend of funny and sweetly sleepy beautifully, setting bear’s sluggish evening misadventures against the grey sky of a winter twilight. It’s lovely, and strikes the perfect mood. and now I may go crawl under my own duvet for a while…
