The Boy is now an expert crawler, except that he has a very “special” way of doing it.
When he first started crawling, he would stick out one of his legs straight out as he crawled along. We all laughed about it, thought it was cute, waited for him to figure out how to properly bend both legs so he could pick up speed, calling him “Peggy”(after his “peg leg” that stuck straight out- thank the hubby for that one!), etc… But as the week went on, I began to notice that our little boy was not, in fact, bending his other leg. He was still sticking it straight out.
So, I worried. Of course I did- I’m a first time mom. And so I consulted a search engine. Of course I did- that’s what any rational first time mother does, right?? And, of course, said search engine gave me a plethora of reasons to worry more. Because that’s what search engines do to first time mothers. In total, I read about how my son’s leg had not developed properly, he could have a calcium deficit, muscle deficiency, perhaps spinal problems?? Every other web-page made me feel more and more sick to my stomach.
I spent an entire week worrying and asking my mother, husband, friends, neighbours, etc.. daily if they thought there was something wrong with the Boy. I cried a bit. I agonized a lot. They all kinda gave me a strange look, probably thinking that I was the one with something wrong with me. Because, as I soon learned, my little guy had a very good reason for sticking his leg straight out. He was getting ready to stand up.
Not two weeks after the Boy started crawling, he began using that now affectionately called “peg leg” to help himself stand. And now he won’t stop standing. In fact, he has become awesome at using that “peggy” leg to assist his never ending quest to stand up as fast as humanly possible. Crisis averted- fears all for not.
So once again, my “new mom” (or should I say “search engine”) fears were completely unfounded and the Boy is completely fine and very physically adept. He is his own person, with his own ways of doing things, and he is just fine the way he is- with a very cute new nickname that I hope doesn’t stick forever!
And, while I know I will probably always over-react with extreme worry whenever the Boy does something that doesn’t fit perfectly into a milestone category (that’s just me!), I hope that I’m learning the lesson that search engines may not be the best place to go with my concerns…I hope…

I am a mother of “grown up” children now!
There was no internet when my children were little. I went to the
library a lot & talked with other mothers.
Information at your fingertips is great, but “take it with a grain of
salt” too!

Really! What did moms do before the internet?? Maybe worried less? Sometimes I think we have too much info at our fingertips!

As parents…we always seem to be searching for information.
What did parents do, before the internet? Can’t wait to hear when your son is up and walking around. What a great stage of development he is in. ENJOY.

Haha I always search to see what’s wrong too! Stupid search engines make me fear for my and my families life. What a great blog Sarah – I will never look at a crawling baby the same 🙂

Absolutely Shawn, thanks for the remind. The Boy’s uniqueness is what makes him such a fun, interesting kid.

Never turn to search engines or parenting books that claim to have the answers. All they do is cause distress!

Search engine-itis happens to the best of us!

We have friends whose son never used his legs when he crawled. You called your son Peggy, they called their son ‘The Wounded Soldier” because he looked like he was crawling under barbed wire to escape the enemy! And, like your son, the Wounded Soldier is just fine.
Sometimes we worry so much when our kids are slightly different that we miss the fact that this means they are also unique and special. Who wants a cookie cutter kid, anyway?!
Loving your blog Sarah!
