I have been thinking about starting to run for, well, years! But I don’t know how. I have tried to do it myself but get winded and tired and end up giving up. I don’t want to join the Running Room because I don’t want to be the slowest or the most out of shape.
So, help! What book would you recommend to get started? What advice would you give me? Are there some people who just can’t run?
Thanks.

I did what Vicky did. I set my route and just ran a LITTLE further each time the walked the rest.
By the 4th run I was STUNNED and how far I could go from just the run before and before I knew it I was pretty much running the whole route. It was a great feeling. My body felt strong and I was proud that I was running – never thought I could do it.
I stopped last summer due to some heavy personal issues and have had a hard time getting back into it. Getting motivated (not that the hangover/muffintop belly I now have isn’t motivation enough) is my issue now.
Wanna start together?

The first time I ran…I simply ran down the street. The second time, I ran down the street a little further. The third time, I ran down the street even more.
I didnt wear a watch. Infact I still dont wear a watch.
I ran with the running room (and was the last) and indeed it was motivating (even if I was last).
So my advice: Set little goals each time you go out. I.e Today I’m going to run around the block.!!

MJ, I highly recommend the Running Room clinics. Don’t worry about being the last…just concentrate on showing up every week and doing your best…you’ll be amazed at how quickly you’ll become a runner, and how great it feels to set goals and accomplish them. I liked the clinics because when you’re first starting it’s so easy to come up with a million reasons to skip your run (actually I can still come up with a million reasons and I’ve been running for a while). Knowing that there’s one evening a week where people are looking forward to seeing you and running with you got me in a good groove.

You can do it, MJ! I used the book called The Beginning Runners Handbook (found here at Indigo: http://www.chapters.indigo.ca/books/Beginning-Runners-Handbook-Proven-Week-Ian-MacNeil-The-Sport-Medicine-Council-of-British-Columbia/9781550546743-item.html?ref=Search+Books%3a+%2527beginning+runners+handbook+10k%2527)
Stick to the program and commit to completing it. Worked for me! Keep posting on your progress too.
