With Valentine’s Day around the corner people have invariably been asking how we celebrate it in our house. Now, while I do have a nice candlelit dinner plan for Ali and me after the kids are fed and in bed, historically that is pretty much the extent of our Valentine’s Day festivities. No flowers, no chocolates, no cards.
It’s not that I’m not a romantic – I’ve spent many a day planning surprise meals, gifts, parties, and the like for my wife. We both kind of just feel that Valentine’s Day is a little more hype than it deserves. I know some women would send their husbands packing if they came home on Valentine’s Day without a heart-shaped box of chocolate, a bouquet of long-stem roses and a big old mushy card. It’s just not what makes my wife tick. Don’t be a hater. I’m lucky – I know.
At the end of the day though, if you love someone 365 days of the year, is a bon bon and cliche card really gonna put you over the top?
Anyway, I hope to cook up a really nice Pasta with a Sundried Tomato Cream Sauce, open a bottle of wine, and snuggle up on the couch to an episode of The Bachelor. What are you hoping your significant other does for you on Valentine’s Day? Any make or break items they HAVE to bring home?

I don’t need mush – opening some wine or cooking something a little nicer for us is good, or even just bringing home a little dessert treat for later after the kids are in bed is really enough. It’s more about the noting of it and the reminder to make sure we take an extra moment than anything more, really. (and since he teaches, it’s hard for him NOT to know it’s coming!)
As for me, his favourite indulgence is Starbucks, though he rarely indulges in it unless he’s given a gift card, so I picked up a heart-bedecked gift card for him, with a good work week’s worth of lattes loaded on.

I agree completely – except I am not sure everyone feels the love all year- so many need a kick in the butt day to remind them to say – “hey I see you”
And when did husband making thoughtful (pink) dinner for wife ever not hit the scorecard as WONDERFUL? The only other thing I would want with that is a little card, something sweet or sexy written on it…..

As long as he brings home a bottle of wine or bubbly, I’m golden. (But I make sure I’ve bought some too… just in case.) Sounds like a tres lovely evening, Gav! Have fun!!
