In about 10 days, my really good friends are expecting their new baby girl to arrive. They’ve been waiting a long time for her and many of us are counting the days down with them. The day she’s due to arrive, I’ll be at my grandfather’s 95th birthday party. I warned my step-mother that I’d be attached to my phone — not trying to be rude but just waiting for the call that she’s here safe and sound.
A joyous phone call. Aren’t they the best? It brought me back to one of my best friends calling to tell me that she and her husband were going to have a baby, via adoption. Probably my favourite phone call of all time.
Moments like this of instant elation shared through the phone line. “We’re getting married!” “I got the job!’ ‘Your mammogram was fine.” “We got the house!”.
These days, news travels so fast. For good news, you don’t have to make the calls, you just post it to Facebook or mass email everyone.
My dad announced Will’s birth via email with this ditty…
About 15 women in the delivery room with Suzanne on one shoulder, the doula on the other, Diana on one leg and me, the sole male, cowering in the corner.
I cut the cord at 7:09pm on the 29th.
A great experience probably enjoyed more by the attendees rather than the deliverer.
My sister emailed out that I was a bitch for only being in labour for five hours and that Will was the size of 20 McDs quarter pounders — fairly fitting.
I love getting the good news emails as well but there is nothing like the phone call. Which is sort of odd for me to type since I loathe talking on the phone. Maybe I should answer more often and get some good news???
Give me the warm fuzzies… I’m that mode. What’s the best phone call you’ve ever gotten?
**And I’m well aware there are HORRID calls to get — god knows I’ve had my share. But for the next few weeks, it’s all sunshine and rainbows around here. Got it?

When my oldest son decided he was done with after school daycare in grade five, the deal was that he had to go straight home at dismissal each day, lock the door behind him and then call me at work immediately. Those daily phone calls at 3:45 were the highlight of my day. By the time my middle son was at the same phase, he had an iPod touch so he’d FaceTime me each day…even better. I loved those calls.
