Invention is the motherhood of necessity, and mothers are all about invention! Some new products come across my desk and I know that they have to have been invented by a mom. Who else would know the frustration of finding dozens of too-small socks in the sock basket (am I the only one who has this giant and constantly growing basket full of socks in her laundry room?) when the kids are screaming that they can’t go to school until they find a pair?
So some smart person (and I’m sticking with my theory that it’s a mom) has invented Growing Socks. Growing Socks are for parents who don’t want to dish out cash every time their child grows a shoe size! Socks that grow…I think it’s a small product that can go a long way for parents.
The concept is that Growing Socks and Growing Tights have a unique patented grow panel that allows “special stretch and recovery performance”. Essentially, the socks grow the fit your child’s feet as their feet grow. They’re available for ages 4-12. The idea is that the four-year old will be able to wear those same socks when they’re six, and the eight-year old will wear those same socks two years (and many, many shoe sizes) later.
I do have some very real concerns about my eight year old son wearing the same socks for two years, but that has a lot more to do with his hygiene than with this patented technology.
My kids have been wearing their socks for a while now, and these socks really do fit perfectly. Because they’re able to stretch to the size, there’s none of that bunching at the toe that can drive a kid who is touch sensitive CRAZY. Because of the stretch fabric in the middle they also seem less baggy than other socks after consistent wearing and washing.
Growing Socks come in a variety of styles and colours, are available exclusively at WalMart and start at $4.99 for a four-pack.

This sounds great. I am going to have to try these socks. I do agree that I am not sure if I want socks to last 2 years.

This is the coolest invention…because my kids are consisitantly growing and losing socks. They need tons of these socks. They have the neatest colors and patterns too. Awesome invention!!!
