Dear Pooping Chair,
Today is a very sad day for me and for you, because today my little boy is 7 months old. And while that may not seem like the biggest deal to most, it’s an awfully huge deal to me. It’s amazing how months are so important with a new child- I suppose that once the Boy reaches a year, I’ll stop counting how many months old he is. But for now, he is a very old 7 months.
What makes this “month-day” very bittersweet is that we have had to say good-bye to you, his pooping chair. This chair has been a staple in our lives since we had the Boy. It has traveled with us wherever the Boy has gone. Pooping chair, you have served as his bed in the early days when he would not be put down, even for a minute, unless he was being rocked, a safe place to buckle him in once he could roll around, a source of great amusement once he discovered the detachable yellow birdie, blue cat, and red dog that hung from you, and our saviour when it came to the Boy’s infamous bowel movements that could take up to half an hour to finish. You were called his “pooping chair” for a reason!
What would we have done without you, pooping chair? You were always there for my Boy and for my sanity! When he got his first cold, he slept only in you. You were the only thing he felt comfortable in, other then his mommy’s arms. You survived numerous leaking diapers and throw-ups. I dare say, you are indestructible!
But it is time to put you away, my friend. The Boy is getting too old to be in you- he refuses to be restrained because he would rather crawl or pull himself up. At 7 months, he seems to feel he is much too mature for a pooping chair and that he can now do his “business” on his own (thanks, in part, to prunes…). So you have been moved to our cold, dark basement along with all other things “baby”: his bassinet, 0-6 month clothes, playmat, and swing.
As I put you downstairs, I really felt like crying, because you were the last thing that reminded me of how small the Boy was and I realize now how big he is getting. And I know it sounds silly, but I was hoping to hold onto just a few more months of my little boy. You were the last representative and I will sincerely miss you!
Till next time…

For a while, we would just move old items into our spare room. This helped feel as though they were still in use, just in rare use. They were there if we needed them.
I recently banished a bunch of stuff to the basement to make room for house guests, and I will admit it was a very weird feeling. Our basement is unfinished and dusty, and I felt like the next time I would see them would be in a dozen years, when my then-teenage daughter would ask me “What the hell does this do old man?”

Our version of the Pooping chair was sadly sold two days ago, two babies spent many happy moments in it. There are no more planned, my son is big enough that he can sit himself upright in the chair and lean over to reach for things on the ground in front of the chair (OMG!) and we are moving, so I am having to go through this hell of selling off all my babies’ posessions. I don’t think anyone around me quite understands how hard it is, I would rather give up every single thing in my closet than sell even one of their things. There have been lots of tears.
God they are only small for such a short time, just be glad you can store your stuff in the basement and you don’t have to watch some stranger walk off with it. It’s too soon for me to be selling this stuff, he’s only eight months old!!!

Our guy turns 7 months on Saturday….I haven’t built up the courage to move his pooping chair and swing downstairs yet. He hasn’t used them in at least a month, but somehow having them around makes me feel like he’s still little. I guess I’ll need to be strong and move them, another day 🙂

Happy 7-month birthday!! I remember the chair being called the ‘Pooping’ chair. Time is just slipping by and he’s in another phase.

I FELT THE SAME WAY!!!!!! Ours went away about a month and a half ago, and it was devistating! I look back at pictures when my guy was so little sitting in the chair, he barely fit when I put it downstairs…
Its going WAY too fast!
