Girls Just Wanna Have Fun

August 30, 2011 by Alice

These clever little girls are keeping themselves amused with a little imagination – and a few books, too.

Toon Books
ISBN: 978 1 935179 208 5
Audience: 4-7 years

Toon Books aim to bring graphic novels to younger readers, creating early readers in comic-style formats. Lilly is a young girl with a big imagination and a new vocation to explore every day of the week. The text is simple and large, and contained in speech bubbles, while Lilly herself is adorably drawn, complete with the little belly of a young child. It’s a charming read with a slightly retro feel and a wonderful attention to detail. Lilly also has a second adventure, in Lilly and the Four Seasons.

by Mo Willems

Harper Collins
ISBN: 978 0 06 200400 0
Audience: 3 – 6 years

Mo Willems is by now a household name, much loved for his madcap Pigeon books and his sweet and funny Knuffle Bunny stories. This is a much quieter book, eliciting more of a chuckle than a guffaw, but his signature blend of sweet and funny is all there. Written in episodes, we see a little bookworm of a girl and her alligator surprising each other over and over, in different ways. In the end, a third character is added to their little circle, much to the alligator’s delight. I love a good friendship tale, and this one is fun with a touch of tender – like all the best ones are.
