There are a few admissions I’ll make here:
I ate 6 Oreos yesterday.
I sent my kid to school in his pajama top this morning because I was too tired to change it.
I feel a weird connection to Khloe Kardashian.
AND on occasion I text when I’m driving.
Today – I’m taking the Oprah no texting pledge because this story about the TTC driver made me say – WTF were you THINKING???? And then I thought about the super urgent message that I had to get to my sister yesterday, that I texted to her while driving with Will in the car and I thought…no WTF were YOU thinking???
For you non-Toronotians, this TTC driver got photographed texting while driving a bus load of people down a major street at 50 km/hours. Wow. Just wow. This is so scary. And I was outraged when I heard about it. Then I texted my friend to say how outraged I was…KIDDING…
But it was a real AHA moment for me. I don’t text a lot when driving but I do on occasion and it’s ridiculous. WTF am I thinking? There are enough things that can happen to Will and I that are beyond my control…this is fully in my control.
So starting today – January 28, 2011, I will be locking my phone in my glove compartment when I’m in my car.
I will also give up Oreos and change my kid tomorrow.
I will continue to watch Keeping Up With the Kardashians and feel shame.
Sherry says
Give up Oreo’s? Are you crazy? Give up the txting – stick with the cookies:)

that PSA is so effective. I think blue tooth is fine in my opinion (although I don’t have one). I went cell less all weekend in my car and its peaceful…..except for changhing CDs for the backseat dj…argh!
Sara says
you don’t need to worry…..I think Khloe like basketball players not water polo….. can’t wait for our 80s dance night and the Serb and I can talk about all things Kardash
Amreen says
ok. i do it too. there i said it. but i’m putting my phone away too. that’s just horrifying. that picture says more than a thousand words.
Lori Dyan says
I once saw a lady applying mascara while she barrelled down the 401. Also, the Serb l.o.v.e.s. that Kardashian show and also thinks Khloe is the bomb. Should I be worried? Scratch that…how worried should I be?

BC is a little behind the times in texting, etc. The new law about no hand-held devices came in about a year ago now and yes, tickets are being given out left right and centre.
I used to drive and text ALLLLLL the time but I don’t now. Part of it has to do with the fact that my old car was automatic and my new (but still OLD) car is a standard. Of course, the possibility of getting a hefty ticket prevents me from doing it as well.
Bonus of taking Transit to school: I’M NOT THE DRIVER so i can do whatever I want! haha

Yikes! I just re-watched the most graphic texting & driving PSA, it is horrifying. I’ll post a link but be warned it is very graphic and very sad. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0LCmStIw9E
I don’t text while driving but I do talk on the phone, without bluetooth. I’ve been meaning to get it but…..
What I don’t get is that some say the distraction of the conversation is bad and that even bluetooth is bad. What do you think? I think it depends on where you are. For example, straight highway driving in good conditions, low traffic, etc., probably OK to talk. City driving, not so much, even with bluetooth.
As for the TTC guy, DUH! How could he think that someone would not notice? And how could he think that was OK with a busload of passengers whose safety he is responsible for?
As for the vow, I’m in too.

I don’t drive, but I’m way PRO not texting while driving, yo. One shouldn’t text while walking either – I watched a lady smack into a lamppost just the other day… one thing at a time, you know? No one is that busy.

What??? OMG!!! I could never ever……give up oreos!
Oh, the texting while driving, not a good thing.

my first response to this was that the ttc is going to come back defending this cuz the union has to protect it’s cubs. and i was going to say “wait and see” and now i just read that the ttc is asking citizens to stop taking pictures of their drivers. so do i say, “toldja so?”.
i don’t think gently asking someone to stop texting would work. have you ever approached a texting driver? after nearly becoming the latest traffic fatality at a lit xwalk the other day by a talking driver i looked at him and gave him the old “hand as a phone” signal and a shrug and i’m the one that gets the finger!
i think i disagree with you, sam, on the fact that they’re coming down harder on texting drivers rather than drunk ones but only because you can see the texting and this is so new. when it was drunk driving having it’s “debut” it was pretty intense and now it is less. however less is still too much. it all needs to stop!
Sara says
I agree with you guys too – the one thing that gets me…if texting is illegal…eating should be illegal as well – I find it way harder to drive and eat then drive and text. But from now on….nothing from me. I’m serious.
Christine says
I agree with everything Sam said. With every cell phone equipped with a camera, people are being “caught” doing everything that people have always done.
I admit I secretly took a photograph of a nutty mom at pick up one day wearing old school pink sweat pants and she had an old big yellow walkman cassette player hanging off (and pulling down) her waistband. That was a WTF for me. I was about to tweet it but thought better of it…
Last week my friend secretly took a photo of the same mom wearing what looked like little girls pink winter boots.
I’m guilty of texting myself, but I only text if I’m stopped. Never while the wheels are moving.
No excuse – I know. I’ll take that pledge with you Sara. Starting today.

Ya, not smart. Not at all.
They were talking about this on the radio this morning and about how the public is now policing public service employees and if it’s fair. I’m kinda on the fence. I KNOW it’s wrong and I am also guilty of doing it.
I mean, the person taking the photo *could* (and very well may have) said, “Dude. You’re making me a little nervous, can you put the phone down, please?” We’ve all made mistakes and for this person to lose their livelihood over it makes me a little queasy.
ON THE OTHER HAND. Yes. Illegal and the safety of so many others is in his hands and for his line of work this should have been a no-brainer.
But! I also take issue with the fact that they are coming down SOOOO hard on texting while driving and not drunk drivers – seems like they still have more rights than someone texting…
Jen says
Good for you, Sara! And OMG. What was that TTC driver thinking?! Bet he’s out of a job.
