Who wants FREE stuff??
Who hasn’t heard of eBAY? Well, how about a FREE eBay?? That is what the FREECYCLE
movement is all about. Freecycle was created by Deron Beal in May
2003, in his home of Tucson, Arizona. His thinking was, why not set up
a web group where people can unload items that they may consider trash,
that might be someone else’s treasure? Beal’s site has become an
internet phenomenon and is now made up of 4,241 groups with 4,476,000
members across Canada, and around the globe.
It’s a grassroots
movement of people who are giving (& getting) stuff for free in
their own towns. Each local group is run by local volunteer moderators.
Membership is free. The most important rule on the site is that
everything must be FREE. A great place to look for something or give
something away!
A need was felt in our Trenton Ontario area
hence, QUINTE FREECYCLE was born on August 31, 2004 and now has almost
1200 members. 2 local sisters Patsy and Suzie took the plunge and
started up their local Quinte Freecycle site. We love to help out
wherever we can and this is perfect. It warms our hearts to give
something away knowing someone else will put it to good use. Since
then, other local Freecycle groups have branched out in other local
areas. The sisters say, It ‘s a great way to organize your home and
clear out those articles you have been meaning to put to good use, but
haven’t ever found the time to do so. There are lots of people
starting out on their own for the first time, or even the second time,
and what better way than to recycle your stuff and help someone out.
You
may not have used that tea kettle in years but there may be some one
that would use it daily. What you are ready to throw away, odds are
someone is looking for the same thing!
The Freecycle Network is
nonprofit organization whose mission includes keeping good stuff out of
landfills. Freecycle provides individuals and non-profits an electronic
forum to "recycle" unwanted items. One person’s trash can truly be
another’s treasure!
So why not check it out and see if there is one in your town or city by going to www.freecycle.org.
If you don’t see a group in your area, then what a great opportunity to
start one!! Sisters Suzie and Patsy say WELCOME to Freecycle!!
