Florida Grapefruit

February 4, 2009 by Jen

It’s a weekday morning and you’re in the kitchen pondering breakfast. What are the options? Cereal? Sure. Toasted bagel? Okay. Florida orange juice? Always. There are tons of options out there for a healthy breakfast, and our Go2Girlz panel of product testers recently had the pleasure of trying one of them: Florida grapefruit. According to Canada’s Food Guide, a half-grapefruit equals one full serving of fruit, which makes it an excellent way to start off your day.

Sliced Grapefruit Sticker - High Res

Some of our testers were surprised to receive fresh fruit in a box in the mail, but in the end every single one of them absolutely loved the ruby red Florida grapefruit they tested.  Ruby red grapefruit are not only the Go2Girlz favourites – they’re the favourite kind of grapefruit among Canadians. So what did the Go2Girlz like best? They were unanimous in their favourite features: the firm, sweet, red flesh and the unbelievable juiciness.

They shared the grapefruits with their families, and then shared their feedback with us. The verdict? Unanimous: the Go2Girlz love Florida grapefruit, would recommend it to a friend and will buy it again.
Here’s what a few of them had to say:

When we opened the box the smell was so wonderful our mouths all watered. The fruits were nice and firm and looked very tasty. The inside of the fruit was a nice bright pinky color. I wasn't expecting it to be so bright. It was also sweeter than most grapefruits that we've tried. It was easy to peel and eat, just like an orange. – Amanda, mom of 2

There is no downside to grapefruit! It is high in fibre, delicious and full of vitamin C and other nutrients. – AnneMarie, mom of 2

It's a fast snack to prepare for kids and they have fun eating them. PLUS, they are so healthy! – Celeste, mom of 2

As a mom I've found I don't have much time in the morning (or ever really!) to make myself a big nutritious breakfast. Therefore the grapefruit was a perfect fast, easy, yummy snack to give me energy. – Sarah, mom of 1

Well we love grapefruits and can easily go through 6 in a day. – Terri, mom of 3

They tasted better than other grapefruit I've had in the past. – Clare, mom of 1

I really enjoyed this product testing. The grapefruit were the best I had ever had. Fresh, juicy and oh so tasty. Mostly we ate them as is but I did try the included salsa recipe with the last one and it was a nice side dish with chicken breasts.

Thanks again to Go2Girlz for the delish grapefruit. My husband is on a medication and was specifically told not to eat grapefruit as it interupts the metabolization of the medication. Oh well – bad for him, great for me. My oldest son shared the fruit and we are all healthier and happier for doing so.

We have always bought grapefruit regularly without a thought as to where it is grown. I never thought that there would be a difference. We had some California grapefruit at home when the Florida grapefruit arrived, so we did a taste test. Wow, there really is a difference! Florida won with flying colors. It was so sweet and juicy. The whole family loved it. I will definitely pay closer attention to my fruit selections from now on. Thanks again!

I don’t eat Grapefruit, but my husband ate them all in a couple days. It reminded him how much he loves grapefruit!

When I was pregnant with my second, I ate a baked grapefruit every morning. I broiled it in the oven for 5 minutes which brought out the sweetness and juices. My mouth waters just thinking of it. Need to go buy grapefuit now.

Thank you for product testing such a healthy food choice! Too often, my kids and I reach for a snack that is salty or sugar laden and I am trying to retrain myself to choose unprocessed foods that are healthier for me and my family.

Florida grapefruit are like a little tropical oasis in the less than tropical Canadian winters. A healthy way to go on a mini vacation!

I love grapefruits and eat them like oranges. We tried them in a variety of dishes as well – cold in salads and heated on a grill. They are an amazing fruit.

Loved the grapefruit! Everyone in the family was thrilled to get them and we ate them up in less than two days! I’ve added grapefruit to our shopping list the last two weeks, now, and we are all enjoying them at any time of day. Thanks for the great opportunity.
