last week we sat down to eat dinner. Josh began devouring his steak. carnivore that he is, he picked it up with both hands and just dug right in. Emily sat for a minute. didn’t say anything. and then, raised her hands in the air and said,
"hello! vegetarian here!"
um, what?!
"do you know what a vegetarian is, sweets?"
"of course. someone who doesn’t eat meat."
"why do you want to be a vegetarian."
"because if we eat all the cows, there won’t be any more. and other animals too. also, it’s not really fair to the animals"
"that’s not exactly how it works, erm. but, sweetheart, it’s okay to eat meat, you know."
"well, i’m going to be a vegetarian. but i think i’m still going to eat fish"
"that’s fine. but you won’t be able to eat chicken. or steak. or chicken soup. or hot dogs. or hamburgers."
"i know. i’m a vegetarian."
well, that settled that. i actually wasn’t surprised by this. i thought this day might come…after she learned that chicken wings were actually wings of a chicken.
and she lasted about a week. until grandma had some chicken soup that Emily just HAD to have. so, i guess now she’s a vegetarian that eats chicken soup. a girl has priorities, you know.

I had a friend who went vegetatian…until she was pregnant. At about 3 months she felt compelled to eat steak. And that was the end of that!
