The urbanmoms.ca Go2Girlz team of product reviewers has been busy lately – their most recent assignment was testing Five Alive® juice boxes. Each of the 100 testers received a sampling of Five Alive® juice boxes in both Citrus and Tropical Citrus flavours to try out with their families. Their response? Five Alive® is a big hit all around!
Five Alive® real fruit beverage is an excellent source of Vitamin C and has no artificial colours and flavours added. The Citrus flavour has over 40% real juice and is a delicious blend of orange, lemon, lime, tangerine and grapefruit. Five Alive® Tropical Citrus also contains over 40% real juice and is the combination of tangerine, pineapple, lemon and apple – bringing an exotic, tropical twist to the citrus favourite. As all-natural juice blends, Five Alive® can be part of a healthy diet.
As a group, our testers and their families were most impressed with the taste of both Five Alive® products they sampled. Almost everyone agreed they would not hesitate to recommend Five Alive® to other moms – in fact many of them already had. In fact, the biggest criticism they had was that the juice boxes were not big enough for their teenagers – many of whom would drink two at once!
But what did our panel of product testers have to say about Five Alive®? Here’s some of their feedback:
Real fruit taste. Tastes fruity. With the tropical flavor, it is a very tasty real fruit beverage. –Violet, mom of 2
The taste! YUM! – Karen, mom of 1
My 13 year old said’ the vibrant color box and the remarkable taste.’ – Violet, mom of 4
The taste of the juice definitely stood out as compared to other similar products. – Nena, mom of 2
The kids love the taste, and the juice boxes are convenient to grab and go. – Therese, mom of 4

They have and always picked it as their favourite drink. – Betty, mom of 2
My husband drank a couple of boxes even though I wanted to save them for our child. But he couldn’t resist the taste either. – Daniela, mom of 1
Alee says
Hey to the dude beneath my comment FiveAlive is awesome and its a lot healther then pop’n’stuff!!!
Tina says
Why would Urban Mom’s support a high-sugar drink like Five Alive? It’s terrible for your kids!
LeeAnn says
Why would Urban Mom’s advocate a drink that is only 40% REAL JUICE for kids!!!! This is not good for kids, This product has a high amount if sugar which is linked to childhood obesity. I come to this site for tips and good advice…I will re-think that next time. I know better than to give my kids Five Alive!
natalie says
Teenage son LOVED the juices, especially the tropical one. Yes, I loved them both, too!
Lynda says
My 13 year old loved the Tropical Citrus and thought it was a fun and tasty alternative to other beverages. Moderation is definitely the key, as it is with other foods with high glucose/fructose content. Overall this product was a hit at our house.
Sharon Brideau says
I agree, anything in moderation is the best way to go.
Have to say that me and my 15 yrs old loved the taste of five alive and really appreciated the samples.Thank you!

My 13-year-old liked the tropical citrus type all right, but not the citrus. Of course, it was a treat for her. As others have pointed out, I tend not to buy “juice” that isn’t all juice.
I wouldn’t buy it. There’s lots of stuff she likes that is healthier.
Brenda Reynolds says
My kids love this and as far as the “health” factor, I think it’s got to be a better choice than pop. As long as they don’t consume tons of it, and they are active, life’s too short. Savour every good taste, adventure, feeling and event you possibly can
Shelley says
My 16 year old really enjoyed testing this product. They were gone in no time at all. Certianly better for her than soft drinks. Water, milk and 100% fruit jucie is always best. But there are still lots of natural sugars in all fruit juices. This is not something that is consumed in vast quantities so I am not worried- their are far worse things kids could consume. I will probably buy this product again. Thanks Urban Moms
Marci says
Convenient drink boxes, but I wouldn’t buy again. The sugar content is much too high – equal to two sugar allotments for a diabetic like me. I am watching my children’s diets carefully to try and avoid diabetes for them.
Flavour was great – just wish they were actually fruit drinks without added sugars, colours, etc.
Healthy can taste good to, and I’m waiting for someone to develope a product that is both enjoyable and healthy!!
Cindy Skertchly says
The juices were tasty, but no nutritional value. The nutrition guide on the boxes said 0% value of Vitamin C. Would not purchase again.
Amberleah says
The husband love the taste, and the juice boxes are convenient to grab and go when flying on his medivacs in the Yukon.
Ramona says
Great tasting treat but overall stick with the more nutritious 100% pure fruit juices.
Scattered Mom says
Drinks like 5 Alive are in moderation in our household, as are store bought granola bars and fruit snacks. I don’t believe that the occasional item is going to cause childhood obesity, but instead there are many factors that contribute to the issue. My child is not even remotely obese. In fact, for many years he was underweight.
My 12 year old is lactose intolerant and has food sensitivities (so yes, I read labels), and I see 5 Alive as a nice alternative to pop or the energy drinks that are so popular with his friends. The small size of the juice box limits the amount he has, as opposed to the 40 oz cans of some other drinks.
Kimberly says
My family loved both flavors of the Five Alive. It’s very convenient to throw into lunch bags.
Chris says
I feel this product is a great alternative to sugary drinks, it is convenient for school lunches, and I know what they are getting. It has a sweet taste to it, then they aren’t wanting pop and fruit punches. When children are too busy to stop for a drink this gives them the boost they need. I think the size is perfect, if it were any bigger it would be too filling, and then kids would be missing out on other nutrious meals and snacks.
Kath says
refreshing flavour – good packaging. but overall no nutritional value.
Kathy Sadler says
When we received the test package I wanted to save them for lunches but my 16 year old was sneaking them out of the fridge every chance he got.He loved them!!
wendy says
Everyone loved them even my sister tried it. My kids will have me buying more.
sonya says
My 2 boys absolutely love 5 alive. it is one of the main choices in juice that they choose. As far as the glucose-fructose goes the fact that my kids are very active and are not couch potatoes i am fune with them drinking it:)
Jennifer Bradley says
My kids liked the tropical flavour more than the citrus flavour but did not like them enough to ask me to buy more. They found both to citrus/acid tasting.
I enjoyed them more than the kids.
I hadn’t noticed the high-fructose corn syrup content and will not likely buy it again.
marisa says
Family really enjoyed the Five Alive flavours & it continues to be a regular shopping item
Naseem says
my 3 year old and 8 yearold loved it and i dont mind it because it is natural juice no artficail flavours and sugar it great
Lynn says
Very disappointed, you are right that we need to read labels and be informed. And yes, I too have concerns about high-fructose corn syrup. Still, I think you are underestimating us by saying we don’t read food labels or know what the ingredients are. I know I do it every time I shop and I do allow my family to have moderate amounts of foods containing these ingredients from time-to-time.
The obesity epidemic stems from a lot of complicated causes, including poverty and lifestyle, education AND nutrition.
Extremely disappointed says
I can tell there are a lot of you who don’t read food labels or understand what the ingredients are. It is not this product that leads to childhood obesity but its the ingredient glucose fructose. Your child drinks Five Alive. How many other products that they eat also contain this? This was discussed by Dr. Oz on Oprah in reference to the childhood obesity problem. Research glucose fructose on the internet. I’m sure you will get an education. I think food manufacturers are killing us softly and we are too ignorant to know this until its too late. Protect your kids. Read your labels and do your homework.
Launa says
My 16 yr. old really liked the both flavors as did my 2.5 year old. With the high amount of sugar I limit it for my little guy. Even the husband got to taste them and he thought they were really tasty to.
Kelli says
I agree with LeeAnn – yes, we need to be aware of what our children consume, but no one product is responsible for childhood obesity. It is our (and our children’s) responsibility to learn to consume many different foods in moderation. My children are teenagers now and I work very hard to ensure they are making informed decisions – much of what they eat and drink is no longer controlled by me. I’m happy for them to choose Five Alive along with other foods and beverages.
Kare says
My teenage kids love the taste. They made comment that it taste like juice not sugar water like many others.
Gisele says
My 12 year old son was very skeptical, he’s just not a fan of mixed fruit juices. But these Five Alive flavour combinations were a hit with him.
LeeAnn says
In response to “very diasappointed” – this product is a great product. My 14 year old loves it! As with anything, moderation is the key. This product does not promote childhood obesity. As with any product, you consume with moderation. It’s a parent’s responsibility to make sure their child is healthy. My daughter is 5’4 and weighs 110 lbs. She drinks this every day, a couple times a day in fact. She is extremely athletic and very healthy.
Lori says
My kids loved this! The girls (13 and 14) took them to school and asked for another when they got home too. Hubby got his hands in there too, so they were gone within 3 days! I’ll definately buy them again.
Jen says
Thanks for your comment. We appreciate and value everyone’s perspective at urbanmoms.ca. However, I would like to clarify – we do not promote products, we have our community decide. That is why we do not have ads on our site or test the products internally. We send product to our members and have them post their comments. They are provided with product information and then asked to test it in their homes and post a review. We do not edit these reviews so they are free to say what they feel. This is the best way to get a true gauge on what others feel about a product. From what I can see, people feel that Five Alive is a good alternative to pop so, likely, it would be consumed in moderation.
Thanks again for your input. I hope this helps to clarify how the product reviews work.

Very disappointed says
I am a little disappointed that Urban Moms would be promoting a product that is detrimental to the health of our kids. You should do your homework before promoting products such as this. As far as I know, this product contains glucose-fructose or high fructore cornsyrup which is largely responsible for childhood obesity. I have banned this product from my home along with anything else that contains glucose-fructose. Its far from natural and healthy. I would advise you to start reading labels before you promote stuff like this.

These a great on the go drinks that are yummy! My 12 year old daughter is not fond of juice boxes but she loves Five Alive These are a regular purchase at the grocery store.
Rosalia says
My family loved it.. and my fridge is stocked up!
Tara says
Great drink. I’ve started carrying one with me all of the time. I’m a diabetic, and when needed, it perks me up and tastes great too.
Therese says
My children were excited to see the Five Alive arrive and more than happy to taste test. We all enjoy the taste of both flavours, and it is a common request at the grocery store. We drink a lot of juice in our house and Five Alive is a favorite.
Carol Wiens says
Delighted to have been selected as one of 100 testing families. My twelve year old daughter’s face lit up when she saw the juice boxes and I seriously doubt that her older sister got her fair share! I don’t buy punch, prefering the nutritional value of juice, and this choice makes both child and adult happy.
Daniela says
The juice boxes did not last long in my household. They were delicious. I thought the kids wouldn’t like it because the citrus would be sour, but it was surprisingly sweet. Way better than pop & soda.
Maria McNaughton says
My kids and husband loved the flavours and the convenience of the juice boxes as I usually buy the large carton. I’m always looking for healthy alternatives to pop and I know I’ve found it with Five Alive.
VioletS says
I can’t say enough good things about this product. I have been buying this for some time because my girls actually request it. I usually buy both varieties as one prefers the Tropical and the other one prefers the Original. Just wish it was in a bigger size.
Marisa says
A great refreshing flavour pick me up , our whole family loved testing Five Alive.
Anonymous says
A Big Hit with our family. I have been buying this for some time as I prefer “Real” juice boxes for lunches over fruit punches. My girls actually request this for their lunches. Just wish it was in a larger size for older children.
Amanda Gullett says
When the Five Alive arrived my girls couldnt wait for them to get cold to try them… so they tried them warm and cold and all said that it was refresing either way…..they loved it and want me to buy it more often.
Amanda mother of 5
Jean says
My boys loved the tropical fruit juices and finished off the samples in under 4 hours. Since they enjoyed it so much I started to buy the larger bottle so they can have it at home as well as on the go.
Anna Curtis says
I really enjoyed the Five Alive. It was really refreshing and just the right size.
Betty says
It is always a great feeling when you as a parent have found a product that your kids will actually drink and it is good for them. One less thing to nag or complain to them about which makes life so much easier 🙂
Diana says
The 5 Alive tropical flavour was a hit with our household!! Everyone enjoyed being taste testers and giving their opinion, especially since it meant I needed to pick some up on a regular basis. I would much rather have them drink this than pop.
Charlie says
The teen of the house loved the Five Alive esp. the tropical citrus but was one of the two at a timers… so we’ve started buying the larger size and putting it in a reusable, she’s also a budding environmentalist 🙂
Nikki says
My teenage son and husband were both quite excited when they saw the Five Alive drinking boxes that had come in the mail. They both really liked the taste and would drink it again if i bought it.
Nena Sinclair says
My 2 teenage sons couldn’t get enough of the Five Alive juice boxes! They made short work of the samples that were sent and then asked me to buy more, which I did happily. I also babysit a 3 year old girl and she normally only drinks apple juice, but that changed when I gave her one of the Tropical Citrus Five Alive juice boxes. Every time I babysit her now, she asks me for “the good juice”!
Kathy says
We’ve always enjoyed the classic citrus flavour of five alive, but we really loved the tropical citrus flavour too. Five alive is a big hit with my teenagers, and I love that they prefer it to pop!
