I went for my second ultrasound last week. I’d had some bleeding at 7 weeks which the doctor wanted to check out, so I’d already seen my little bean once (ended up the bleeding was nothing! Phew!).
At my 12(ish) week appointment, the doctor tried to find a heartbeat and couldn’t. Although this wasn’t the first time it has happened to me (exact same thing happened when I was pregnant with The Boy), it was nerve wracking to say the least.
In a way, I wish my OBGYN would just send me for a 12 week ultrasound instead of torturing me with the 15 minute ordeal of trying to find a heartbeat. I KNOW she’s not going to find a heartbeat this early. It really is cruel to even attempt.
I had to wait about 4 hours to get an ultrasound. TORTURE. Having already experienced a missed miscarriage during my first pregnancy, I knew that there was a chance the outcome wouldn’t be good. And, while I try to be positive, sometimes it’s just easier to expect the worst and be surprised by the best.
And, thank God, surprised by the best I was. The moment the ultrasound technician put her wand on my stomach she announced there was a heartbeat…and a super active baby. Baby was kicking and punching and flipping like a mad man and a strong heartbeat of 163. So, here is Baby’s first picture…a beauty, right?

So glad things worked out! It’s a girl – I feel it!
Ruth (aka Grandma) says
What a little miracle!
A girl or a boy would be wonderful!
But because it’s so active (like it’s big brother), I guess it’s a boy.
Then again…it might be like it’s Aunt Lizzy- active!
Ok….my final guess is….a BOY!
Jen says
What a perfect little peanut! Girl or boy, that one’s a doll.
Sarah says
Sara- I was sure I saw a penis, but apparently it was just the umbilical cord. The technician was mocking me behind my back, I’m sure, for thinking my 12 week old had that big of a package.
Sara says
Oh Sarah…that would be SO hard! I’m starting to dislike many ultrasound stories I hear. The baby is beautiful….and if you could tell if it was a boy now…well, your husband would be proud….
Chris says
I am hoping it’s a girl, but I not sure my side of the family is capable of having girls.
