So I’m working out on Tuesday when I spot a cool-looking alternative chick hitting a punching bag right next to me. This woman stood out from the rest: most probably in her mid to late forties, she didn’t sport the usual coiffed blond locks and Lululemon-wear uniform espoused by most of the gym patrons of that vintage. Instead, she wore black leggings, a funky rocker T-shirt. Her hair was short, wild, spiky and reddish, and most important, her eye shadow was a bright orangey-pink. I’m not a huge fan usually of eye shadow to the gym, but it definitely worked for her.
Where did I know this face? Why was she so familiar? Of course – flashback to the 80’s childhood – it’s Jane Siberry, the super-awesome, alternative rocker most famously known for her 80’s hit, Mimi on the Beach.
Being the uabashed celebrity-stalking freak that I am, I got super-excited and exclaimed to all those around me, including my 20-something trainer "Look it’s a full-fledged rock star in our midst – don’t you remember Mimi on the Beach?"
Everyone in the gym looked at me like I was off my meds. No one around me had ANY idea who Jane Siberry was. I felt, yes my friends, life a full-blown geriatric. The music of my youth was now fully "retro" – oldies, even.
Jane, I recognised you and admired your wicked-awesome rocker style from afar – you’ve still got it going on.
Here is The Walking by Jane Siberry for all you fans of 80’s alternative music out there who feel like they’re being increasingly marginalised today’s Britney-lovin’ youngsters.

That is just so very cool. I’ve met her once (years ago) and she is just one of those very naturally cool, funky and brilliant artists.
I, too, would have thought it was exciting! Did you know she changed her name to Issa now?

I have a Jane story. A friend of mine ordered something from her website (maybe 8 years ago?). There was some confusion about something in the order, so my friend got a call on her answering machine: “Hi, this is Jane Siberry calling. Would you mind giving me a quick call about your order…” Cool celebrity sighting!

Jane! Jane! I saw her at a pub years and years ago… like the early nineties and even then my friends thought I was old for knowing “Mimi…”. Anyway, funny she came up as my sister recently sent me a video of her singing “Calling All Angels” on YouTube in memory of our mom…and since you and I talked about moms…. Well…anyway, you take a look. It is a nice song.
I have no clue how to send a link to you….sorry….duh me…
