Becoming a mom is a very rewarding and incredibly life changing event. It can also become a very isolating time, and that is just what Room to Grow founder’s Alisha Brignall and Shannon Kozak found after having their children in 2005. Shannon had just moved to Calgary from her home town of Abbotsford B.C and Alisha had moved to Bragg Creek while waiting for her house to be completed. When they met at a playground in McKenzie Towne in mid 2006 they commented on how isolating being a new mom was, and how hard it was to find quality children’s programming. After realizing that they had many of the same ideas about what a centre could be, Room to Grow was born.
Room to Grow, located just off of 14th St and 17th Ave SW in Calgary, specializes in quality children’s programming for 0-4year olds. Playgroups, Parented and Unparented Preschool, Art, Dance, Music, Yoga, and a French Playgroup are just some of the programming that is offered. Monthly Mom’s Night Out’s, parenting classes and events, and prenatal classes help to connect moms that would otherwise not have a place to make friends and de stress about the daily grind of being a parent.
Room to Grow also supports other mommy businesses by renting the space out to mom’s who want to run classes on nutrition, babywearing, literacy and topics pertaining to the new mom and baby.
Special events such as the Christmas Shopping Day in October let mom’s browse and buy from the variety of retail catalogues that Room to Grow has. This allows the parents to make all their purchases in convenient location while their children partake in arts and crafts provided by Room to Grow staff.
