My birthday was last week, so I finally read this picture book – and loved it!
The Best Birthday Party Ever!

I’ll be honest – sometimes, even us librarians judge a book by its cover. I looked at this book about a birthday party and thought, “Ooh, way too pink for me.” I am a fan of birthday stories, though, so I finally picked it up, and enjoyed it entirely.
This little girl is all about more! more! more! as she plans her party, and her plans are, I must say, rather awesome. She has started early, with 5 months, 3 weeks, 2 days, and 8 hours to go, and invites everyone, including the lady at the bank who gives her lollipops. With that much time for her to obsess and plan, you can imagine how this might grow slightly out of hand… and so it does. Magicians, tiaras, inconceivably tall cakes, entire fairs, presidents and queens in attendance, parades… Uh, yeah.
This could all have been horribly obnoxious and bratty, except for that when the big day comes, and what she has is more like a pretty standard little-kid birthday party, she feels like she’s the luckiest kid alive. And so? Cute take on a child’s wild, excitement-fuelled imagination that ends on a perfect note. Perfect for a little girl with a birthday coming up!
