My hubby was diagnosed 8 years ago and is controlled by diet alone (for now)He has started to gain a little weight back and getting very upset with himself. I signed us both up at the hospital for the diabetic clinic so we would get an updated refresher course of what we xhould be doing. It’s given us another kick in the bottom and on course again. He now has a close relationship with the diabetic dietician and calls her with whatever concerns he has.
Keep a good attitide!

I have had type one diabetes for 26 years and weight has always been an issue for me. Prior to getting pregnant I was never able to get my weight lower than a certain number, I always seemed to plateau. It never helps that I suffer from frequent low blood sugars.
In trying to lose any amount of weight, at any point in my life I have found that doing blood sugars at least 8 times a day is integral in staying in good control. Which also contributes to lower weight gain. Diabetics are famous for their digestive problems, not to mentions our slow metabolism and unfair ability to hold onto the weight we gain.
The other thing I started doing after my son was born, is put myself on fiber therapy. Yes, I’m talking metamucil. I have also been taking PGX, which is another type of fiber, you take up to 6 caplets with every meal. I have lost 20lbs since starting it in January. It also helps to cut out white sugar and anything made with white flour. Bread, pasta etc. I eat my large meals at breakfast and lunch. Dinner is always a salad with lots of colorful veg and a source of protein, as well as fresh fruit or yogurt.
I have found that drinking ALOT of water during the day helps curb my appetite. If I crave things like bread I limit myself to one piece of whole grain bread, if I crave potatoes, I bake a sweet potato. Obviously I have weak moments. If I crave something sweet I suck on one of the many Russell Stover sugar free candies I have stashed in various places around the house (they may have a laxative effect so follow the recommended serving of 3/day).
Hope some of these ideas help. So far I have never been healthier, and have lost more weight than I ever have in my life.

Hello ‘alwaysagiggle’
A quick question first… Is your blood sugar balanced now that you are on the pills? If it hasn’t been balanced yet weight loss will be a challenge, simply because, more insulin in the blood means less fat burning for you. So priority#1 – get the blood sugar under control if it isn’t now.
Next…a replacement for bread and potatoes?? Hard to replace as you know, however, what you may want to do is cut back to only 1 or 2 servings of these per day MAX. Fill up instead on healthy whole grains such as brown rice, quinoa and amaranth, plenty of fruits and vegetables as well as lean protein throughout the day.
Once again, there is no direct replacement so you need to wrap your head around that. These foods may be preventing you from losing weight and if you really want to lose weight you just have to commit to cutting back. Set limits, stick with them.
Hope that helps, keep in touch and let me know how things are going.
