Living in Toronto has its ups and downs – like sitting in traffic for 45 minutes at Bay and Adelaide because they’re doing construction AGAIN – definitely a "down". However, after 12 years in this city, I think the "ups" definitely outnumber the lows.
For me, the biggest "up" about Toronto is the incredible diversity within which we live. Trudeau’s mutliculturalism is thriving around us in every crevice of this metropolis. In my opinion, that characteristic gives the lives of us Torontonians a richness that is unsurpassed in most other locales.
This past Saturday night, the Yonge & Dundas square played host to desiFEST 2007, a rockin’ celebration of South Asian music and song. The square was vibrantly full of people, stalls and booths with Indian snacks, desserts and steaming masala chai. I attended the event with some friends and family members and couldn’t help but get caught up in the festive atmosphere. The highlight of the evening (which featured such hot Indo-Canadian talents as The Bilz, Deesha and Zameer) was definitely the band Josh. Made up of two Montrealers, Rup and Q, Josh started off as a Canadian band and has now exploded across the international stage and is enjoying massive popularity in India. Their music is a unqiue mix of bhangra, dance, and Indian classical and folk. My favourite Josh tunes are "Mahi Ve" and "Mausam". Check out their great music at www.planetjosh.com
