The potential for good times is there if you pick the right one.
“Newlywed, Overfed and Nearly Dead”
With the terms people use to describe cruise shippers its no wonder that I spent years avoiding them. That changed when I was asked to cover a wedding for The Toronto Star. The couple was getting married at a cruise ship port and I’d need to join the weeklong cruise to be able to attend. I boarded that Royal Caribbean Cruise with all of the enthusiasm of a man walking the Green Mile. And then…gasp…I liked it.
Cruises since have taught me that it’s not the cruise itself that matters; it’s whether the cruise is a good match for you. Here are some tips to help you decide:
1. The Big Ships
Think: Royal Caribbean
When to say YES: You’re traveling with a big group of people and not hoping to get too intimately involved with your ports of call.
What you’ll get: Yes, the often-lamented “floating buffet” is here, but there’s usually also an upscale dining option available with reservation and at a reasonable add-on cost. You’ll also get all of the cheesy-but-fun ship activities (think Macarena after dinner) that you only enjoy on vacation and maybe even a surf machine or rock-climbing wall.
What you won’t get: Alone time. These ships are big and getting bigger.
Best for: A big group traveling together, family reunion or special event.
2. River Cruise
Think: Avalon Waterways
When to say YES: You’re looking for something a little more calm and intimate. You don’t mind traveling in a pack as long as the pack is small and comes with air-conditioned coaches and educated guides. You tend to get seasick.
What you’ll get: A smaller ship traveling smaller waterways, more in depth shore excursions, floor to ceiling windows with stunning views and an older crowd that may not be much fun for (or fond of) younger kids.
What you won’t get: There’s probably no pool (maybe a hot tub) and you may spend considerable amounts of time on a ship where you’ll need to amuse yourself and your family (Yahtzee anyone?). You may get jazz in the piano bar but not a chance you’ll see a costumed character.
Best for: Romantic couple getaway, Families with older kids.
3. Luxury Cruise
Think: Silverseas
When to say YES: You want it all: 5 star treatment and the quiet to appreciate it.
What you’ll get: An affluent crowd who believes in the good life. A butler to pack away your things and fine dining cuisine on your private balcony. Glasses of champagne brought to you on the deck and a spa waiting to serve.
What you won’t get: Loud parties, blaring loudspeakers or tacky décor.
Best for: Upscale Girlfriends’ Getaway, Romance
4. Theme cruise
Think: Disney
When to say YES: You love everything Disney or you’re traveling with kids.
What you’ll get: The best of the theme park without the lineups or the crowds, good food with plenty of treat options, a lack of nickel-and-diming at the gift shops and theme parties that will blow their mind. The kids clubs are extensive and age appropriate and run late into the night.
What you won’t get: A kid-free vacation even if you leave yours at home. This is Disney. They’re around.
Best for: Kids of all ages, Kids at heart
Whatever you choose:
1. Book early. There are career cruise-shippers out there and they know that the best way to get the best cabins at the best times is to get in early.
2. Disconnect or Pay the price: None of the cruise lines have yet to offer free wifi and the onboard options are pricey.
3. Know when to say when: The change in locations, smaller quarters and excitement can mean everyone’s a little crabby a few days in. Expect it and take a siesta when needed.
