With eight children it is inevitable that they are all going to be involved in some type of activity or sport and that is definitely the case in this house hold of plenty! One plays Ball Hockey and has an agent, two others do fencing, one is in gymnastics, one is trampoline and tumbling and also has an agent, and my oldest one is on a competitive acrobatic gymnastics team and has an agent as well. Some days are so exhausting!
I have a rather unusual situation in that the hubby is never home so having time to focus on my family is very important to me, yet between practices, rehearsals, auditions, competitions, homework and 8 month old twins there simply isn’t enough hours in a day! We mama’s are so busy with everything else along with preparing meals we haven’t any time to connect with our family. On particularly busy evenings having a go to list of simple and delicious recipes allows me to spend less time in the kitchen on my own and more time with my family.
A great recipe that I found is Chef Boyardee’s “Chilli oni”. It’s heartiness, no preservatives, and convenience is something all moms can appreciate and kids love its great taste! Easy preparation allows me to assign some of my kiddies to help out. It gives them a sense of independence and provides me some quality time with them. Cooking with the kids is easy with Chef Boyardee!

About once a month my boys and I have what we refer to as “Soup Sunday”. This is the day when we empty the fridge for the week ahead (yes, some HAS GOT TO go in the garbage!) and consider a new concoction for dinner that night. Our soups have contained the regular ingredients such as vegetables and pasta (and usually a meat that I have intentionally cooked the day before with plans for soup). But ocassionally we are caught off guard and the adventure begins. Some of our soups have included leftover lasagne, butter chicken, fried rice, and even peanut butter. My boys, aged 8 and 4, are keen to add just about anything on Soup Sunday, but I am careful to monitor ingredients and really do my best to make sure that whatever new brew we concoct is actually edible and nutritious. It’s a cooking adventure every time!

My daughter and 2 sons have always woke up early. So when they were toddlers we would get up at 530 and start making banana chocolate chip muffins. Every recipe we tried I wrote in the recipe book what time and who I made it with and the date. Now as I go back through those recipe books those comments with each recipe bring back vivid memories of finger licking and sweetness.

Favourite memories in the kitchen… definitely the birthday and name day cakes! I have half the kids you do (four boy), so birthdays and name days (Greek tradition) are plentiful around here. We have had some very creatively decorated cakes around here and I enjoyed eating every single one of them… except for those cookie monster cupcakes, which dye your mouth blue… 🙂

My 10 yr old and I bake together all the time. Some of our best conversations have come from these baking moments. We have had various sensitive discussions on topics such as religion, homosexuality, acceptance, bullying in a relaxed non preachy way. At the same time its a time where we can just enjoy each others silly company and he learns a skill. Its great for his confidence as I have let him do more and more as he has gotten older. In fact he cracks an egg with far more skill than I ever will. I treasure these moments and hopefully so will he. Now as for cooking Jake and Dad bond over that as supposedly I have no talent in the cooking department : )

As part of his Red Star requirement with Cubs, my oldest son Benjamin had to plan, prepare and eat a meal. He needed to fulfill the guidelines set out in Canada’s Food Guide and here is what he came up with:
Orange Juice
Steak
White Rice
Peanuts
Cheese
He had so much fun helping and he especially enjoyed helping with the BBQ! It was great fun and the other kids wanted in on the action too. All of us gobbled it up so quickly. We added green beans for those who did not want to eat the peanuts and we sprinkled shredded cheese on the rice. Overall it was a great meal and a great time to spend with Benjamin. I think that we’re going to have to make this a weekly thing with the kiddies. They love to help in the kitchen!

I love baking with my children and over the years have so many fond memories. One year between all my daughter I do have three of them we did our Christmas baking which turned into more like sampling on their party. Another baker weighing in here. I get such a kick out of baking with my 2 and a half year old son and four and a half year old daughter. My little guy proudly pulls all of the ingredients out of the cupboards and puts them on the island while his sister puts on her apron and chef’s hat. Those are the peaceful, happy moments. Many skirmishes ensue as they fight over who gets to pour and stir what. (Banana bread’s our favourite thing to make.) My favourite part? When my son tastes the batter and pronounces, “It’s very good.” (more tasting) “It’s very yummy.” (licks fingers) “It’s very tasty.” 🙂

Unfortunately I really do not enjoy cooking – I am not very domestic at all!. What I make best are reservations!
But I do my best as my 5 year old boy loves to cook. We make very basic dishes that he can mostly do himself, like scrambled eggs, omelets, sandwiches and cookies. What we make together are memories and time spent together which we will always treasure. Nothing can beat that, despite my aversion to cooking.
This would be a wonderful prize to check out some new kid friendly (and mom) friendly recipes!

My favourite kid helped recipe was when we made home style mac N cheese. Kids just go crazy for that so for them to feel the pride that they helped cooked it with me was just great. I let them know how delicious it was and how proud I was of them for making it oh so cheesy. We cook lots of other things too but the easiest are always more fun and I always invite them to add a few ingredients to the mix. We just love adding red kidney beans to all the pasta dishes. It adds more fiber to the meal and makes us fill up faster.

My daughter and I have been cooking and baking together since she was a tot – she’s nearly 17 now (how did that happen?) In fact, this evening, she just asked me, “Mom, when can we make gingersnaps?” Hurray for PA Days – we can make them tomorrow!
One of the first things she learned to make was home-made pizzas: 1/2 a toasted bagel (otherwise they get too soggy), topped with tomato sauce, lots of oregano (she was a pro at sprinkling the oregano), and grated cheese, popped under the broiler until the cheese is melty.

Just this past weekend Patty, Taylor and I baked homemade Sugar Cookies; we

some cookie designs and decorated cookies.

One year, I asked my little one to wash the potatoes for me so that I could make mashed potatoes. I then ran up to take a quick shower. As I stepped out of the shower, I heard a knock on the door and my daughter told me they had finished, but that I forgot to tell them to use soap when “washing” the potatoes. It was okay though, because they thought of it and used the soap anyway. I came down to a kitchen sink overflowing with suds and some of the cleanest potatoes I have ever seen.

The most memorable time I have had is baking with my 2 kids. My sister is a really exceptional baker and has a homebased side business. Ever since my little girl and son were old enough to hold a spoon, they would sit on my sister’s counter and help bake. Our most favourite are my nonna’s almond bigne, mostaccioli and Almond Anisette Biscotti. We also help her with making chocolate flowers for weddings and chocolate baby booties and favours for a baby shower. Issy’s most favourite are the cookie (rum) balls covered with chocolate. Alex likes to help with the christmas cookie baking.
Every year we have “Baking with Zia Pattie day”. My 2 sisters and I bring the nieces and nephews to my sister Pattie’s house. They first decorate her tree (plastic ornaments) and then learn a recipe that they each want (this year, my daughter wanted to learn how to bake Mint Shortbread, and my son wanted to learn how to make Rocky Road). We just had this and it was such a success.
Baking and cooking with kids is so much fun. It is also a way of carrying on family recipes and traditions. (One thing I still haven’t mastered is my nonna’s amazing meatballs. Everything is the same but something is missing – what is really funny is that my son (who never met her) has made those meatballs like nonna used to make.

Every Monday after school, my kids and I make a ‘fancy’ dinner. We plan it, I ensure we have the proper ingredients and when I say ‘fancy’ it isn’t necessarily foie gras. “Fancy” according to my kids, is lots of garnishing, pretty plates, anything that makes the food appetizing for them. For example, yesterday we made chicken parmesan with bow tie pasta and a salad with cut up peppers in the shape of bow-ties, they cut out the mozzarella cheese for the chicken in bowtie shapes…you get the picture. We have a scrapbook of photos of their culinary creations and they LOVE poring over it.

My kids love cooking! They have really all been in the kitchen since the age of 2 baking bread and cookies and gingerbread houses etc. I think the best part is my 9 year old daughter makes dinner (her speciality she calls it) a few times a month by herself (except for the oil part)! Breaded chicken is her favourite…she has her little bowls set out for the egg; one for flour and one for bread crumbs. Does the whole preparation, then I put it in the oil, but she takes over again to flip the chicken; take it out and put it on a plate w/paper towel and continues till all the chicken is done. My boys love to cut up the broccoli and cucumber that accompany the chicken, and they help with the rice. It is amazing how a kitchen can bring a family together!!

I was brought up with Chef Boyardee and so is my son! I like to cook, but admit I do prefer easy recipes like Chiloni!!

I always let the kids decorate the cupcakes I make. They love this and do a pretty good job, well, the 7-year-old anyways. My 2-year-old needs to work on his technique lol.

My youngest grandson loves to cook as much as his big brother. Last week the youngest took over and made a beautiful snowman cake with a little assistance with the measuring. He manned the mixer after combining all of the ingredients set out. He helped decorate the cake and it turned out beautifully. He is all of five years old.

Making gingerbread and Christmas cookies with the kids was so much fun! Because of the time spent in the kitchen with them, my oldest son now enjoys cooking and baking on his own.

The first time I baked cookies with them was amazing because of the pride they had in making something themselves from scratch.

I’ll never forget the time I made the mistake of turning my back for a moment (really, it was just seconds!) and my little boy dumped the whole bag of flour all over the table! Of course, now he is a teenager and can be a huge help in the kitchen…when he feels like it, of course.

Chef Boyardee is the best in a hurry. It’s easy to add to it to boost the veggie quota without the kids noticing and my 8 year old can get the meal started with minimal interference from Mom which makes him feel great! My favorite cooking time in the kitchen has to be at this time of year baking and decorating gingerbread houses with my four boys – it’s a riot:)

Good luck Theresa! Sounds yummy! I would love to get those Hungarian pastry recipes and surprise my hubby!

My kids love cooking with me. Especially their favourite Macaroni and Cheese. They stand on a stool over the oven and stir (with my supervision of course). My grandma let me do this as a kid when I went to her house for sleepovers and it is such a special memory for me. I want my children to experience the same thing and to also inspire a love of cooking just like I have.

My kids love to bake, so of course I let them. It is great to learn and have quality family time at the same time!

We do lots of cooking together, lots of baking, to get my son to “eat” dinner he helps put some food together to enjoy. Its good quality time.

Definitely the best cooking moments would be baking with the kids! They love nothing more than to get in there with me, and add the ingredients, mix and all of that. They hang around the kitchen peeking into the oven saying “I made this”. Christimas time especially with baking cookies, it is defnitely messy, but there’s nothing like having fun with the kids and seeing the pride on their faces when they come out of the oven!

I love baking cookies with my kids because they love creating all kinds of fancy cookies with sprinkles and chocolate chips etc. and then proudly declaring that they made these treats. They love to dip cookies in chocolate, too!
When we make a recipe for dinner that requires lots of chopping they love to help, too, and then claim which vegeggies they chopped as we all enjoy our dinner. Somehow they seem to eat more when they help prepare the meal.
