May is just around the corner (yikes!!), & that is when the movie studios like to start rolling out their “big guns” for the start of the big summer movie season. Yep, that’s right folks, apparently summer now starts May 1. Heck, daylight savings time can start the first weekend in March, so why can’t the summer movie season start in May?!? So, grab some popcorn, sit down, & check out what is heading to theatres over the next few months.
State of Play (April 17)
Okay, so I was wrong. Apparently summer now starts in April. Oh well. One word about this movie. Cast. Russell Crowe, Rachel McAdams, Ben Affleck, & Helen Mirren. I’d pretty much see anything with this cast, but this movie is also based on the critically-acclaimed & hugely-successful BBC mini-series, so it apparently has the substance to back it up. Let’s just hope that Hollywood didn’t screw this one up when it crossed the pond.
17 Again (April 17)
Grab your 12 year old daughter/niece/neighbour so you have an excuse to go see this movie. Honestly, I don’t really get the whole Zac Efron thing. I have two boys who are far too young for High School Musical. But, he just looks so darn cute in the trailer. Plus Leslie Mann. Hilarious. Genius. Amazing. I’ll stop now. My only problem is that I’m fairly certain that this…
I love Matthew Perry, but I’m just saying.
X-Men Origins: Wolverine (May 1)
Not a movie I would necessarily recommend, but come on. Hugh Jackman (even with the muttonchops he’s hot), Liev Schreiber, Ryan Reynolds, & Taylor Kitsch. Really don’t care what else it is about. And I’m fairly certain that I can get my hubby to see this one.
Ghosts of Girlfriends Past (May 1)
Seems like pretty standard chick-flick fare, but I just love Jennifer Garner (also love that she is still Jennifer Garner, not Jennifer Affleck, or worse Jennifer Garner-Affleck). And Michael Douglas?!? How old is that dude? Still boggles the mind that he’s married to Zeta-Jones.
Star Trek (May 8)
Honestly, how awesome does that look?!? I love the little peeks we get at our beloved original characters, all young & fresh. Plus, J.J. Abrams!! The man can do no wrong! I’m lining up the babysitter now!
Terminator Salvation (May 21)
So, are we back to liking Christian Bale yet or not? I always want to like him, he just makes it so darn hard for us. Maybe he’s the new Sean Penn? I liked this trailer because it hints at an actual plot, as opposed to just big robots shooting & blowing things up. This one could go either way. Is this Christian Bale a la Batman or even Empire of the Sun, or is it Christian Bale circa Reign of Fire?
Up (May 29)
Pixar’s latest movie looks cute, & who can say no to Ed Asner’s old curmudgeon Carl Fredricksen? Pixar is the most bankable movie studio, because everything they put out is top notch. My only concern is that the ante was upped so high with Wall-E that anything would be a letdown from that. Probably doesn’t matter because it has a cute kid, a funny dog, & a fairly empty summer (as far as “family-friendly” fare goes) to just rake in the dough.
The Proposal (June 12)
I couldn’t resist. I know, Sandra Bullock plays a slightly-different variation on the same character that she has been playing for, oh, about 10 years. But, honestly, that “it’s the morning” line just cracked me up. And Betty White. Love that woman.
Harry Potter & The Half Blood Prince (July 17)
What’s a “Coming Soon” post be without some Harry Potter?!? I just couldn’t resist sharing with all of you the latest trailer for HBP. Lots of snippets of new scenes, & I like the emphasis on the quest. I just worry that people will expect that much more from the movie due to the extra 8 months we have had to wait for it.
Now that you know some of the movies that I’m looking forward to, I’d love to know what movies have caught your eye & are definitely on your list of must-sees for the months ahead.
